ELECTROLYSIS PROTECTION
Sacrificial zinc anodes usually found on the outdrive
housing, trim cylinders or propshaft to protect softer metals
exposed to the water. Electrolysis attacks the least noble
metals first. Because zinc is a less noble metal, it will
decompose before other metals. Check these zinc anodes
periodically and have them replaced when they are 50%
gone.
Zinc is also used to protect metal that is exposed to
saltwater. The salt causes a galvanic action that decomposes
metals.
