Symptom Possible cause Remedy
Joystick
Joystick not
working at all
Joystick not connected Connect joystick to THEC64 and
try again
Joystick fault Test joystick on a desktop or
laptop computer (Windows,
Linux, macOS) to verify it is
working correctly
USB port fault Test another compatible USB
device in the USB port to
determine if port is faulty
Faulty joystick Try a different joystick
Joystick not
working in a
program
Joystick not correctly configured
for the program
Check which joystick port the
program expects the joystick
to be connected to. If port 1
(for a C64 program), then
this needs to be specified via
filename flags or CJM files. See
CHAPTER 8 for further details
Some programs don’t require or
use a Joystick
Check that your program uses a
joystick. If it only uses keyboard
but you want to use a joystick,
create a CJM file to do this. See
CHAPTER 8 for further details.
Player One
and Player Two
controls have
swapped over
Some two-player games on
the C64 switch the joysticks,
so what would be player one’s
joystick becomes player two’s
joystick in a two-player, two-
joystick game and vice versa
Do not unplug and reconnect
the controllers. Simply swap
controllers between players.
