Overview

This document is the Customer Operation & Installation Manual for the Rinnai AVENGER 25Plus and CAPELLA 18Plus Unflued Room Heaters. It provides comprehensive information on the appliance's features, operation, maintenance, and safety guidelines.

The Rinnai Unflued Room Heater is a portable convector space heater designed to provide warmth and comfort in residential spaces. It operates using gas convection, with some models offering an additional electric convection mode for enhanced heating. The heater is equipped with a micro-computer that records selected preset temperatures and programmed timer settings to maintain optimal comfort levels.

Function Description:

The primary function of this appliance is to heat a room efficiently and safely. It offers various operating modes to suit different heating needs and preferences:

  • GAS Mode: In this mode, the appliance heats the room using continuous gas convection, automatically adjusting to maintain the set temperature.
  • GAS ECON Mode: This mode utilizes gas convection. After maintaining the set temperature for 30 minutes, the comfort control system progressively lowers the set temperature by 2°C over 60 minutes. This feature aims to prevent overheating and save energy.
  • GAS ECON AUTO OFF Mode: Similar to GAS ECON mode, this mode also uses gas convection and lowers the set temperature. Additionally, gas combustion will automatically start and stop to maintain the adjusted set temperature, further enhancing energy efficiency.
  • GAS ELECTRIC Mode: This mode allows the appliance to heat the room using either gas convection or a combination of gas and electric convection. Electric convection is engaged when the room is cold or when there's a high heat load. Gas combustion remains continuous, while electric convection cycles on and off to maintain the set temperature.
  • GAS ECON ELECTRIC Mode: This mode combines the energy-saving features of GAS ECON with the flexibility of GAS ELECTRIC. It lowers the set temperature after 30 minutes and uses both gas and electric convection as needed.
  • GAS ECON ELECTRIC AUTO OFF Mode: This is the most comprehensive energy-saving mode, combining all features. It lowers the set temperature, and both gas and electric combustion will automatically start and stop to maintain the adjusted set temperature.
  • ELECTRIC Mode: In this mode, the appliance heats the room solely using electric convection. The electric element switches on and off automatically to maintain the set temperature. Timer operation is disabled in this mode, and electric convection only operates when the set temperature is at least 2°C higher than the current room temperature.

Usage Features:

The heater is designed for user-friendly operation with several convenient features:

  • Push Button Ignition: A single touch of the STANDBY/ON switch is all that's needed to operate the heater.
  • Control Panel: The top-mounted control panel provides a clear display of the current time, set temperature, room temperature, and various indicators for mode, timer, and maintenance. It includes buttons for MODE, TIMER, SET, OVERRIDE, and UP/DOWN arrows for adjustments.
  • Remote Control: A remote control is provided for convenience, allowing users to operate the heater from a short distance. It can turn the heater ON/STANDBY and adjust the temperature. A caddy with self-adhesive tape is included for remote control storage.
  • Dual Weekday/Weekend Timer: This advanced feature allows programming the appliance to turn on for two separate periods each day (morning and evening) for both weekdays and weekends. This "Set and Forget" functionality ensures the heater operates according to a consistent schedule without daily adjustments.
  • Pre-Heat Mode: Working in conjunction with the timers, the Pre-Heat function automatically operates the appliance before the programmed start time to ensure the room reaches the desired temperature by the set time. The heater senses the room temperature one hour before the programmed ON time and adjusts its operation accordingly.
  • Override Function: This allows manual intervention to operate the heater outside of programmed timer settings. If the heater is between a timer's finishing and starting times, selecting Override will turn it on.
  • Child Lock: When activated, this feature locks all controls except the STANDBY switch, preventing accidental operation or tampering by children. If activated while the appliance is in STANDBY, all functions are locked.
  • Filter Indicator: A flashing filter indicator alerts users when the fan filters are covered with dust, signaling that cleaning is required to prevent strain on the appliance.
  • Memory Function: The micro-computer stores selected preset temperatures, programmed timer settings, and operating modes (Economy/Auto-Off, Pre-heat) to maintain consistent comfort levels.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the heater's efficiency and longevity:

  • Filter Cleaning: The fan filters should be cleaned at least once a week during the heating season. The manual provides clear instructions on how to remove and clean Filters 1, 2, and 3 using a vacuum cleaner. It is important not to operate the heater with the filter warning lamp on, as this can cause overheating.
  • General Cleaning: All parts of the heater can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Solvents, aerosols, or abrasive cleaners should not be used.
  • Professional Servicing: Rinnai recommends servicing the appliance every two years. Any damaged power supply cord, gas supply hose, or other components must be replaced by Rinnai or a suitably qualified person. All service and repair work should be carried out by an authorized person.
  • Fault Finding and Error Codes: The manual includes a comprehensive fault-finding guide and a list of error codes that may appear on the digital display. These resources help users diagnose and potentially resolve common issues, or provide specific information when contacting Rinnai for service.

Safety Devices:

The heater incorporates several safety devices to ensure safe operation:

  • Over Heat Switch: Automatically turns off the gas and/or electric heating element if the heater gets too hot (e.g., due to blocked filters or louvers).
  • Fuse: Protects the electrical circuits. A blown fuse must be replaced by an authorized person.
  • Flame Failure Device: Automatically cuts off the gas supply if the flame fails.
  • Oxygen Depletion Safety Device: Cuts off the gas supply if the oxygen level in the room drops below a preset limit.
  • Tilt Switch: Cuts off the gas supply and/or power to the electric heating element if the heater is knocked over or jolted during operation.
  • Power Failure Safety: In the event of a power failure, the gas valves automatically close. The appliance must be operated manually once power is restored.

The Rinnai Unflued Room Heater is designed for ease of use, energy efficiency, and safety, providing a reliable heating solution for your home.
