Overview

The Rinnai Neo is a gas fireplace designed for both inbuilt and freestanding installations, offering modern aesthetics and advanced heating technology. It is available in New Zealand and features a 4-star energy rating.

Function Description

The Rinnai Neo functions as a gas fireplace for heating residential spaces. It utilizes a natural draft combustion system with a single main burner, strategically placed imitation logs, and granules to create a realistic flame effect. The appliance includes a fan that distributes warm air into the room, with a delayed start to prevent cold air discharge and a delayed stop to cool the appliance down. It can be operated via a wireless controller or directly from a control panel on the appliance itself. The wireless controller acts as a thermostat, sensing room temperature and communicating with the Neo via radio frequency to regulate heating.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Supply: Dedicated 240 V earthed 10 A power point. The power cord is 1500 mm long.
  • Heat Output: Up to 6.94 kW.
  • Clearances (from glass edge):
    • Freestanding: 75 mm (top), 10 mm (sides), 400 mm (front), 400 mm (rear). Can be positioned directly on the floor.
    • Inbuilt: 400 mm (top), 400 mm (sides), 1000 mm (front).
  • Mantel and Surrounds (combustible materials):
    • Mantel height from top of glass: 400 mm minimum.
    • Mantel depth at A (vertical clearance): 250 mm maximum (with additional 100 mm vertical clearance for every 50 mm of added mantel depth).
    • Surround from side of glass: 200 mm minimum.
    • Surround projection at C (side clearance): 250 mm maximum.
    • Minimum mantel height from floor (when heater is mounted on floor): 910 mm maximum.
    • Minimum width for surround: 915 mm minimum.
  • Wireless Controller:
    • Dimensions: 140 mm (height), 80 mm (width), 20 mm (depth).
    • Battery: 2 x AA batteries (approx. 12 months life).
    • Operating range: Within 10 m of the fire.
    • Temperature control range: 7-32 °C (with a setting below 7 °C indicating no set temperature).
  • Safety Devices:
    • Overheat switches: Automatically turn off gas if the heater gets too hot (e.g., blocked air outlet louvres), allowing restart only after cooling.
    • Electrical fuse: Protects electrical circuits.
    • Flame failure sensing system: Cuts off gas supply if the heater fails to ignite after several attempts.
    • Power failure: Gas valves automatically close and shut down the unit during power cuts.
    • Glass dress guard: Mandatory to reduce risk from serious burns; no part should be permanently removed.
    • Child lock: Built-in function on the wireless controller requiring simultaneous button press (PWR + OK) to turn on.
  • Flue System: Rinnai approved flue system is mandatory. For combustible openings, a Rinnai zero clearance box and flue kit are mandatory.

Usage Features

  • Operation Modes:
    • Manual Mode: Allows setting a specific room temperature. The heater will turn on/off to maintain this temperature.
    • Automatic Mode: Programmed timer and temperature settings. The heater will automatically turn on/off based on preset times and temperatures.
    • Flame Control Mode: Allows setting a preferred flame height (seven stages, F1-F7, highest to lowest) regardless of room temperature. The heater will not automatically turn off unless the room exceeds 40 °C.
  • Wireless Controller Display:
    • Room Temperature Display: Shows current room temperature.
    • Set Temperature Indicator: Displays programmed temperature (or flame setting in flame mode).
    • Time and Day of Week: Shows current time and day.
    • Operation Mode Indicator: Displays "PROG," "MANUAL," or "AUTO."
    • Transmit Indicator: Appears when the controller is transmitting.
    • Battery Indicator: Flashes when batteries need replacing (functional for approx. five days before shutting off).
    • Flame Indicator: Indicates flame height and pulses when the heater is operational but off due to reaching set temperature.
  • Programming: The controller allows programming up to four periods per day for each day of the week, totaling 28 programmed periods. Users can set start times and desired temperatures for each period.
  • Temperature Units: The thermostat display can be set to °C or °F.
  • Gas/Electricity Failure: In case of interruption, the heater turns off and requires manual restart. For gas supply interruption, a specific sequence of ON/OFF button presses is needed to reset the gas control.
  • Fan Operation: Starts approximately four minutes after the heater is switched on and stops approximately eight minutes after it's switched off to manage air temperature.
  • Start-up: The heater automatically goes to the highest setting for approximately 45 seconds to establish the flame pattern.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: External surfaces can be cleaned with a soft damp cloth and mild detergent. Solvents should not be used, and the heater should not be cleaned while hot or operating.
  • Servicing: Rinnai recommends servicing the gas fireplace, including flue system inspection, every two years for reliable operation. More frequent annual servicing is beneficial in dusty environments or where there is excess lint (e.g., dog hair, new carpets). Regular maintenance and servicing are not covered by the Rinnai warranty.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as burner not lighting, smell of gas, soot deposits, condensation, incorrect operation times, blank controller display, and the heater turning itself off.
  • Soot Deposits: Small soot deposits on the log set or glass are normal. Significant build-up requires a service call.
  • Abnormal Flame Pattern: The manual illustrates normal and abnormal flame patterns, advising users to contact Rinnai if they observe unusual smells, difficulty establishing a flame, very short/long flames, partial burning, or severe soot build-up on the glass.
  • Installer Details: A section is provided for recording installer information, including company name, installer name, address, phone, mobile, certificate of compliance number, and installation date.
  • Warranty: The Rinnai Neo comes with a 2-year minimum warranty covering manufacturing defects, provided the product is installed and operated according to manufacturer's instructions and serviced by an authorized Rinnai service centre. Proof of purchase is required for warranty claims.
