Overview

The Rinnai Evolve 950 is a gas fireplace designed for heating rooms, featuring a sealed combustion chamber and a fan to distribute warm air. It offers both manual and remote control operation, with various settings for flame appearance, temperature, and timers.

Function Description

The Rinnai Evolve 950 operates as a gas fireplace, providing heat to a room. Its core function involves a sealed combustion chamber that purges before gas flows and ignition occurs. A combustion fan starts several seconds before the fire ignites, ensuring proper operation. Once ignited, the main burner establishes a flame, and the heater automatically modulates between burner settings to achieve and maintain a default set temperature of 22 °C. The appliance is designed to distribute warm air from its top into the room. It incorporates several safety devices, including a flame failure sensing system, pressure relief, an overheat safety switch, an air temperature sensor, a thermal fuse, an overcurrent fuse, and a spark detector, ensuring safe operation.

Usage Features

The Evolve 950 offers flexible control options.

Manual Operation:

The appliance can be turned on and off using a control panel located in the top left corner of the outer frame. This panel features an On/Off button and LED indicators that show the unit's status (e.g., blue for On, red for Standby, green for Timer on, flashing green for power disruption). When turned on manually, the heater will default to a 22 °C set temperature and will lose any previously set timer and clock settings until the remote is used to re-transmit this information. It's crucial not to unplug the power supply to turn off the unit, as the convection fan needs to operate for several minutes to cool the unit down.

Remote Control Operation:

For full functionality, the appliance's On/Off button must be in the "On" position. The infra-red remote control has a normal operating range of 5 meters and should be aimed at the receiver unit on the lower right-hand side of the appliance. The remote's display shows temperature and time, and it transmits information every time a button is pressed (unless deactivated or locked). Signal transmissions are confirmed by a brief illumination of the signal indicator on the remote, and the unit will flash and beep to confirm receipt of settings. The remote uses two 1.5 V AAA batteries; old and new batteries should not be mixed, and batteries should be removed if the remote will not be used for a long time.

Key Remote Functions:

  • Standby/On: Operates the heater remotely.
  • Flame: Adjusts the flame picture, offering seven settings. This function can be used approximately 90 seconds after the heater starts and overrides the automatic mode. If the room temperature exceeds 40 °C while the flame function is active, the heater will switch off as a safety feature.
  • Extra Low: Provides energy-saving room temperature control. When the room temperature exceeds the preset temperature, the burner reduces to an extra low setting.
  • Lock: A child lock function that locks all remote functions except the Standby/On button. It can be cancelled by pressing the Lock button for three seconds.
  • Timer 1 & Timer 2: Sets two independent timer programs for automatic operation.
  • Override: Manually overrides current timer operation, allowing the heater to operate outside of programmed times. All remote functions (except flame) are available in override mode until the next timer setting is reached. Pressing Override a second time or Standby/On during override will revert to standby and cancel timer programs.
  • Time Set: Sets the clock and timers. The clock must be set before timers can operate.
  • Adjusting Temperature: Up and down buttons allow setting the preset temperature in 1°C increments between 16°C and 26°C, or to "L" (low) for continuous low combustion, or "H" (high) for continuous high combustion.

Timers and Preheat:

The preheat function works with the timers, ensuring the room reaches the desired temperature by the programmed on time by sensing the room temperature one hour prior to the start time. Timer settings can be viewed briefly by pressing the Timer 1 or Timer 2 buttons. To turn timers off, press the relevant timer button again.

Power Failure Mode:

If power is disrupted during operation, the heater enters power failure mode upon restoration. The error display will show flashing zeros, and the lower LED indicator on the control panel will flash green. To reset, press the On/Off button twice on the control panel, or use the remote to press Standby/On once to go to standby, then a second time to turn the heater on.

Initial Use and Noises:

During initial operation or after a long period of non-use, ignition may not occur immediately due to air in the gas pipes. If this happens, the unit will switch off automatically, and the user should try operating it again. The heater may produce clicking noises due to the expansion and contraction of internal components, which is normal. The heater will not ignite if the On/Off button is pressed immediately after turning off; a 20-second delay is required.

Soot Deposits:

Small soot deposits inside the heater or on the glass are normal. However, significant soot build-up indicates a problem and requires a service call.

TV Installation:

Due to the fan distributing warm air outwards, installing a TV above the fireplace may be an option. Rinnai recommends a minimum clearance of 400 mm between the bottom of the television recess and the fire. Users should check with their television supplier for specific clearance requirements, as some manufacturers have warranty conditions against installing TVs above fireplaces.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning:

All external surfaces of the heater can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent. Solvents should not be used, and the heater should not be cleaned while hot or operating.

Filter Cleaning:

The appliance has filter strips at the inlets of the room air return. A build-up of dust or particles on these filters reduces airflow, decreases efficiency, and can cause the appliance to shut down. Filters need regular cleaning using a vacuum cleaner, a soft dry cloth, or a soft brush. Water should never be used to clean the filters.

Filter Blockages and Overheat Protection:

If a blockage is detected, the blockage LED (near the infra-red remote receiver window) will flash. If no action is taken, the heater will eventually shut down to prevent overheating, displaying error code 14 in the error display window. To restore normal operation after a shut-down:

  1. Press the On/Off button once to turn off the heater.
  2. Clean the filters.
  3. Press the On/Off button once to turn on the heater.
  4. Use the remote control to resume normal heater operation.

Obstructed Warm Air Vent:

If the warm air vent is obstructed (e.g., by an object too close to it), the blockage LED will illuminate, and the appliance will switch to a low setting. To restore normal operation, remove the obstruction and use the remote control.

Servicing:

Rinnai recommends servicing gas fireplaces every two years, including inspection of the flue system. In dusty environments or areas with excess lint (e.g., from pet hair or new carpets), annual servicing is beneficial. Regular maintenance and servicing are not covered by the Rinnai warranty. Servicing and repair should only be carried out by authorised personnel. Users should not attempt any service work beyond what is mentioned in the troubleshooting section.

Abnormal Flame Pattern:

Each Rinnai flame fire has a distinct flame pattern that should be consistent after an initial warm-up period of approximately 20 minutes. Abnormal flame performance or pattern, such as unusual smells, difficulty establishing a flame, very short or long flames, flame burning only partially across the burner, or severe soot build-up on the glass door, can indicate a problem (e.g., blocked gas injectors or shifting burn media) and requires contacting Rinnai. Slight carbon deposits are normal for appliances with a live fuel effect and luminous flames.
