Overview

The Rival Food Slicer, available in Models 1101E and 1030V, is a versatile electric appliance designed for professional-style slicing with speed, ease, and precision, catering to mealtime, snack time, and party time needs. It aims to enhance food flavor and help reduce food bills by enabling users to buy items like bacon, cold cuts, and cheese in bulk and slice them uniformly as thin as desired, which also helps food keep longer.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Rival Food Slicer is to slice various food items, including meats, cheeses, breads, cakes, cookies, vegetables, and fruits, to a desired thickness. It is equipped with a powerful motor and a sharp blade to handle different food textures. The slicer is designed for household use, providing a convenient way to prepare foods for sandwiches, salads, chips, and other culinary applications.

Important Technical Specifications:

Model 1101E:

  • Blade: Big 6½" serrated steel blade, precision ground for accurate slicing, prevents shredding, and never needs sharpening. It is easily removable for cleaning.
  • Thickness Control: Thickness regulator knob allows adjustment from wafer-thin to ¼" thick slices. Turning clockwise makes slices thicker, counterclockwise makes them thinner.
  • Food Tray: Locks securely on track for smooth, effortless gliding. It is large enough for baked breads, roasts, hams, and sections of cheese and luncheon meats.
  • Safety: Features a safety thumb guard for added protection and a steady, controlled grip.
  • Power: Operates on 120V, AC outlet.

Model 1030V:

  • Blade: Big 7%" serrated steel blade, precision ground for accurate slicing, prevents shredding, and is easily removable for cleaning.
  • Thickness Control: Thickness regulator handle allows adjustment from wafer-thin to ½" thick slices. Turning clockwise makes slices thicker, counterclockwise makes them thinner.
  • Food Tray: Similar to Model 1101E, it locks securely on track for smooth gliding and accommodates various food sizes.
  • Safety/Stability: Includes a Vac-O-Matic® base to lock the slicer securely to the countertop and a Protect-O-Stop feature to anchor the slicer to the counter edge.
  • Power: Operates on 120V, AC outlet.

Usage Features:

Preparation:

  • Place the slicer on a clean, dry, flat, smooth surface.
  • Ensure the food tray is to your left and the thickness regulator knob/handle is to your right.
  • For Model 1030V, unfold the Protect-O-Stop over the counter edge and slide the Vac-O-Matic® Table Lock arm into both slots under the leg bracket, then press the power lever to lock the slicer in place.
  • Ensure the switch is in the "Off" position and the thumb nut holding the blade is tightened.
  • The food tray should glide smoothly; if new, a few drops of salad oil may be needed on the track.
  • Place food on the food tray, pulling it away from the blade. Slip the food grip onto the back edge of the food tray. Trim extra-long or large foods (e.g., slab bacon, brisket) to fit the platform.
  • Set the thickness guide to the desired slice size using the thickness regulator knob/handle.
  • Place a plate, waxed paper, or aluminum foil under the slicer to catch slices.

Slicing:

  • Plug the cord into a 120V, AC outlet.
  • Slide the switch to "On" and allow the motor to run for 30 seconds to warm up.
  • Grasp the food grip with your left hand, keeping your thumb protected behind the thumb guard. Apply even pressure.
  • Slide the food tray forward toward the blade, then move it back and forth steadily and easily. Gently press the food against the thickness guide for even slices.

Post-Slicing:

  • Turn off the motor and unplug the slicer.
  • For blade protection and safety, turn the thickness regulator knob/handle to realign the thickness guide with the blade.

Hints for Best Results:

  • Meats: For wafer-thin slices, chill thoroughly before slicing. Meats should be boneless. Partially freeze foods with uneven textures (like fish and thin steaks) for easier slicing.
  • Bacon: Chill thoroughly. Remove rind from smoked bacon if desired. Slice about ⅛" thick for nice cooking.
  • Roasts: For warm boneless roasts, let them set for 15-20 minutes after removing from the oven to retain juices and prevent crumbling. Slice about ½" thick. Remove strings one at a time as they near the blade (motor off).
  • Corned Beef/Brisket: Chill cooked brisket overnight in cooking liquid, then drain and pat dry. Remove excess fat. Slice well-chilled brisket to desired thickness.
  • Cheese: Slice while well chilled. Cover with foil to keep moist. Allow to reach room temperature before serving to enhance flavor. Swiss cheese with lacy holes is best when cut thin. Cheddar-type cheese can be sliced thick or thin. Note: Cheese contains an edible gum that may stick to the blade; turn off the motor and wipe the blade with a damp cloth if necessary.
  • Breads, Cakes, Cookies: For dainty sandwiches, slice bread about ⅛" thick. Cool fresh bread before slicing; use day-old or slightly stale bread for extra-thin toast slices. Ideal for party breads, pound cake, fruit cake. For wafer-like ice box cookies, chill dough and slice.
  • Vegetables and Fruits: Excellent for potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage (for slaw), eggplant, squash, zucchini. Slice potatoes thick or thin for chips. For carrot curls, slice lengthwise in very thin strips and soak in ice water to curl. Oranges, grapefruit, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, and cored apples are delicious in summer salads. Slice fresh pineapple neatly.
  • Canning: Use the slicer for cucumbers and onions for pickles, apples for pies, and vegetables for the freezer.
  • When slicing various foods, save juicy meats or tomatoes until last.

Maintenance Features:

Cleaning:

  • Unplug the slicer from the outlet.
  • All slicing parts are removable for cleaning.
  • Wash with a soft cloth or sponge and a mild soap or spray cleaner. Rinse and dry.
  • NEVER USE STEEL WOOL OR SCOURING POWDER on any part of the slicer.
  • Food Tray, Thickness Guide, and Food Grip can be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher.
  • DO NOT WASH BLADE IN DISHWASHER.

Blade Removal and Replacement:

  • To remove the blade: Place your left forefinger in the center of the blade. With your right hand, unscrew and remove the thumb nut. Push out the threaded shaft and remove it. Tap the blade forward against the palm of your hand to separate it from the gear housing. Insert your forefinger into the center of the blade and carefully lift it off.
  • To replace the blade: Lower it into slot (A). Turn the blade back and forth to ensure gears engage properly. Insert the threaded shaft through the blade and screw the thumb nut onto the shaft. Tighten securely.

Food Tray Removal and Replacement:

  • To remove: First, ensure the thickness guide is on the thickest setting. Slide the food tray completely to the rear. Grasp the front edge with your left hand and the rear with your right hand. Lift the front edge until it snaps out.
  • To replace: Insert the locking tab into the track and press down firmly on the food tray.

Thickness Guide Removal and Replacement:

  • To remove: First, lift off the food tray. Turn the thickness regulator knob counterclockwise until the threaded shaft releases. The thickness guide slides out to the left. Wash in hot, soapy water, rinse, and dry. (Can also be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher).
  • To replace: Align the threaded shaft and guides into slots. Turn the thickness regulator knob clockwise until the thickness guide lines up with the blade.

Motor Removal and Replacement:

  • To remove: Loosen the set screw with a screwdriver or dime. Grip the motor with your right hand and hold the slicer base firmly with your left hand. Tilt the motor upward and slide it out from the slicer.
  • To replace: Insert the shaft into the opening in the blade head. Move the motor lightly up and down, exerting slight pressure, until the shaft slides all the way in and the motor shoulder meets the blade head opening. Turn the motor down until the bumper rests firmly on the base. Tighten the set screws until snug.
  • NEVER USE A WET CLOTH ON THE MOTOR OR PLACE THE MOTOR IN WATER.

Lubrication:

  • After washing the blade, wipe it dry. Wipe the gear housing with a damp cloth and wipe dry.
  • From time to time, apply Vaseline® to the gears and blade bearings to maintain easy operation.
  • From time to time, apply Vaseline to the threaded shaft of the thickness guide.

Rubber Feet:

  • Clean with any grease-removing cleanser, such as alcohol or window cleaner.
