(2) When Connected to a MIDI Player or Sequencer
When this unit is connected to a MIDI player or sequencer (when the COMPUTER Switch is at
the MIDI position), the data which is produced as a result of playing the SK-50’s keyboard (*1) is
sent out from MIDI OUT to the MIDI player or sequencer. If the “Soft Thru” feature (*2)
provided on the MIDI player or sequencer is set to “ON,” whatever data that has been sent out
will be routed back to the SK-50 at its MIDI IN connector, and will cause its sound generator to
produce those sounds.
So, whenever you instruct the MIDI player or sequencer to play music, those instructions are
conveyed through the MIDI cable to the SK-50’s MIDI IN connector, and the SK-50 will play
whatever notes it has been requested to play.
When configured in this manner, the unit will ignore any data that might be arriving on the
COMPUTER cable. At the same time, it will not send any data out through the COMPUTER
interface.
*1 The data sent out by the SK-50 not only consists of all information describing what is played
on the keyboard, but also includes information about every Tone change made on the panel. It
also describes every instance where the Pitch Bend feature has been turned on, and an
alteration in the pitch has been made (and all similar modifications).
*2 Soft Thru is a feature that directs that a copy of all data arriving at a sequencer or computer’s
input will be sent out again. When this feature is turned ON, data for everything you play on
the SK-50’s keyboard will circle around through the external unit and come right back again.
To avoid having every note sounded twice, you should turn OFF the Local function on the SK-
50 (☞ p. 23). Some sequencers or computer software will automatically send a Local OFF
message to the SK-50, so the instrument may already be at the appropriate Local OFF setting.
