7. MINUS-ONE PERFORMANCES
The SK-50 allows you to enjoy “Minus-One” performances—where you choose one Part you
wish to play on the keyboard yourself, while all the other Parts are played by a computer or
MIDI sequencer/player. This allows you to polish your skills in playing melodies while enjoying
the backing provided by commercially available music data, or songs which you have
previously created.
* A good example of commercially available music data would be the “SMF Music Data” selections
offered by Roland (compatible with both GS and GM sound generators). This collection of music data
(on floppy disk) is provided in the Standard MIDI File format (a universal format designed to allow
music data to be used with a wide variety of devices). This assures that you will be able to play this data
using almost any of the currently popular sequencers or software.
Press the PART button to check which Part is currently selected (the Part which will sound
when you play the SK-50’s keyboard). Its number appears in the display.
While holding down the PART button, press either UP or DOWN to select the Part which you
want to be muted (it will ignore all music data sent to it by an external device).
While holding down the PART button, press the MIDI button. The “=” that appears in the
display will change to a “-” and the indicator on the PART button will light, which means that
Part will now ignore all music data that arrives from an external device.
You can now play the Part which is muted on the keyboard yourself.
To return to normal, and have the muted Part sound again, once again hold down the PART
button and press the MIDI button.
