10. TRANSMITTING SETUP DATA
We recommend that you always record the group of data items known as “Setup Data” at the
beginning of each song that you create on your computer or MIDI sequencer.
Once you have this Setup Data stored at the very beginning of a song, the sound generator will
automatically be placed in the state suitable for that song as soon as playback starts. Without
this Setup Data, the sound generator could still be carrying settings that were in effect for a
previous song, but which are inappropriate for the song you are currently playing.
There are two types of Setup Data; one for GS units and one for GM units.
* If you are using software applications which are designed specifically for GS/GM sound
generators (such as Ballade 3), you may not need to send the Setup Data, since in most cases
such applications will automatically place the data required to appropriately prepare the
sound generator at the beginning each song.
* You should send the GM Setup Data when you wish to create music data that will be
compatible with a wider range of devices, particularly those that carry only the GM logo.
Otherwise, you would ordinarily send the GS Setup Data.
The contents of the two types of Setup Data are as follows:
