Overview

The SimpleTech SimpleDrive is an external disk drive designed to provide reliable, high-capacity storage for computers. It is compatible with PCs running Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, or Vista operating systems, and also supports Mac OS X. The SimpleDrive connects to a computer via USB 2.0/1.1 or FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394a) interfaces, offering data transfer speeds of up to 480 megabits per second for USB 2.0 and 400 megabits per second for FireWire 400. Deluxe models include both USB and FireWire ports for enhanced flexibility.

Technical Specifications:

  • Hard Drive: 3.5 inch, 7200 RPM

  • Weight: 2.0 lbs. (0.91kg)

Usage Features:

The SimpleDrive is designed for easy installation, requiring no special tools or equipment. Users simply connect the drive to an available USB or FireWire 400 port on their computer, and Windows automatically installs the necessary files. For optimal performance, it is recommended to install the latest Windows updates and service packs.

The device includes a Capacity Meter on its top surface, which illuminates to visually indicate the amount of available storage space. This meter consists of four sections, each representing approximately 25 percent of the drive's total capacity. When available storage falls below 10 percent, the meter flashes red for 10 seconds and then turns off. This visual cue helps users monitor their storage usage.

A key feature is the One-Click Backup Button. Once the included ArcSoft TotalMedia Backup & Record software is set up for scheduled backups, pressing this button instantly initiates a backup of selected files and folders from the computer's hard drive to the SimpleDrive.

The SimpleDrive is preformatted as an NTFS volume. For users planning to use it with Windows 98SE or Me, it is recommended to create two partitions: a FAT32 volume for compatibility with these older operating systems and a larger NTFS partition for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. Instructions for formatting disk drives are available in the Windows operating system documentation. It is crucial to back up any important data before formatting, as this process deletes all existing data.

Users can manage files on the SimpleDrive just like any other drive on their computer, saving, copying, moving, and deleting files. The drive appears as "SimpleDrive" with an assigned drive letter in Windows Explorer (e.g., SimpleDrive (F:)).

Connecting and Disconnecting:

To connect the SimpleDrive:

  1. Connect one end of the provided USB or FireWire cable to the corresponding port on the back of the SimpleDrive.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to the corresponding port on the computer.
  3. Connect the AC adapter cord to the DC-IN socket on the back of the SimpleDrive.
  4. Connect the power cord to the AC adapter.
  5. Connect the other end of the power cord to an electrical outlet or power strip.
  6. Set the Power switch to the On position. The Capacity Meter will illuminate for 10 seconds, showing available storage. Note that SimpleDrive does not support simultaneous use of both USB and FireWire 400 ports.

To disconnect the SimpleDrive safely:

  1. Close any open files and exit any applications running on the drive.
  2. Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the System Tray.
  3. Click the "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device" popup.
  4. Once Windows notifies that it is safe, unplug the SimpleDrive from the computer's USB or FireWire port.

Software Features (ArcSoft TotalMedia Backup & Record):

The SimpleDrive comes pre-loaded with ArcSoft TotalMedia Backup & Record software, which facilitates data backup and restoration.

  • Installation: Users double-click Setup.exe from the root directory of the SimpleDrive to launch the installation wizard, select their preferred language, and follow on-screen instructions.
  • Starting the Software: Access the software via Start > All Programs > ArcSoft TotalMedia Backup & Record > TotalMedia Backup & Record.
  • Backing Up:
    • Media Files: Users can select "Photo, Video, Music" to back up specific media types (Photo Files, Video Files, Music Files). They can choose between a Full Data Backup (all selected files) or an Incremental Backup (only new files since the last backup).
    • Personal Documents: Users can select "Personal Documents" to back up various document types (E-mail Files, Microsoft Office, Finance, ACT!, Microsoft Works, Media Center TV Show, My Internet Explorer Favorites, Web Page Files). Similar to media files, options for Full or Incremental Backup are available.
    • Specific Folders: The "Advanced Backup" option allows users to manually select specific files and folders from their computer's directory structure (e.g., Desktop, My Documents, Local Disk (C:), SimpleDrive (G:)) for backup.
    • Scheduling: The software supports scheduling periodic backups, allowing users to define how often, when, and at what time backups should occur.
  • Backup Destination: Backups can be directed to a CD/DVD (by selecting the CD/DVD drive) or to the SimpleDrive itself (by selecting "Hard Drive" and browsing to the SimpleDrive).
  • Restoring Data:
    • From CD/DVD: Users select "Restore From CD/DVD," insert their backup CD/DVD, and follow the on-screen instructions of the Restore Utility.
    • From Hard Drive: Users select "Restore From Hard Drive," choose the backup file from the list, and proceed with the Restore Utility.

Maintenance Features:

For optimal performance and reliability, users are advised to install the latest updates and service packs for their Windows operating system. SimpleTech does not perform data recovery services. If a SimpleTech Hard drive is defective and data recovery is needed, users are directed to an external URL for a list of data recovery vendors, though SimpleTech does not endorse or guarantee these services.

Warranty and Support:

SimpleTech provides customer support during the warranty period (1 year for 160 GB SimpleDrive; 3 years for 250 GB, 320 GB, 500 GB, and 750 GB SimpleDrive models). Support is available Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm Pacific Standard Time via phone, email (through their website's Tech Support/RMA Request Form), or online chat. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use but excludes damage from accidents, misuse, unauthorized disassembly, or modification. Products with a "limited lifetime" that fail due to estimated life expiration are not covered. The warranty is void if the drive enclosure seal is broken, unless it was broken by a commercial data recovery company for critical data retrieval, in which case specific documentation is required for an exchange.
