1.7 Explanation of Used Terms
Term Explanation
Genset Electric generator with combustion engine
Hybrid system System for the control of energy flows based on a programmable logic controller
(e.g. SMAHybridController or Power Plant Manager)
Various energy sources can be integrated into a hybrid system (e.g. PV power
plant, genset or battery-storage system).
Redundancy Redundancy is the additional presence of a functionally identical or comparable
resource of a technical system when this resource is normally not needed during
fault-free operation. An example of this is a redundant system controller such as
the SMAPowerPlantManager. This additional resource increases the reliability
and thus the availability of the system.
Programmable Logic Controller
(PLC)
A programmable logic controller is a digitally operating, electronic system. It
uses programmable memory for the internal storage of user-oriented instructions
to control functions and various types of machines or processes through digital or
analog inputs and outputs.
