The HS40 is a powerful headlamp as well as a versatile tool lamp. It utilizes a powerful SST40 LED to
provide a nice beam for working, running, hiking and more. Powered by one 18650 battery and featuring a
simple but elaborated user interface, HS40 is your reliable partner for every day use.
Safety Instructions
HS40 is a powerful headlamp. Never point the beam directly at a person, animal or moving vehicles.
Doing so could cause retinal damage. Please do not allow children to play with it. Strobe mode may
cause seizure in persons with photosensitive epilepsy.
Operating the headlamp for a long time in Turbo or High mode will warm it up. And to protect it from
over-heating, it steps down lower mode automatically. This is normal.
HS40 is intended to be used with an 18650 rechargeable battery.
When installing the battery, make sure the anode (+) side always faces towards the head/LED.
Unscrew the tail cap half a turn to avoid unwanted activation during transport. It also prevents
the battery from draining while the headlamp is in standby.
Avoid hitting or dropping the headlamp.

Overview

The Sofirn HS40 is a versatile and powerful headlamp designed for various applications, including working, running, and hiking. It features a robust SST40 LED, providing a strong beam of light, and is powered by a single 18650 rechargeable battery. The headlamp boasts a user-friendly interface, making it a reliable companion for everyday use.

Function Description

The HS40 operates with a single switch that controls all its functions, offering both Stepped Mode (Group 1) and Ramping Mode (Group 2).

In Stepped Mode (Group 1):

  • ON/OFF: A single click turns the headlamp on or off.
  • Change Brightness: While the headlamp is on, pressing and holding the switch cycles through Low, Medium, and High brightness levels.
  • Shortcut to Moonlight: When the headlamp is off, holding the switch for 1 second activates Moonlight mode. Releasing and holding again will cycle through the standard levels (Low/Medium/High).
  • Turbo: A double click, whether the headlamp is on or off, activates Turbo mode. Another click returns to the previous mode.
  • Strobe: A triple click, whether the headlamp is on or off, activates Strobe mode. A double click cycles through Strobe, SOS, and Beacon modes. A single click returns to the previous mode.
  • Electronic Lockout: To prevent accidental activation, the HS40 includes an electronic lockout function. When off, four fast clicks will lock the lamp, indicated by two blinks. While locked, only Moonlight mode can be accessed by holding the switch. Four more fast clicks deactivate the lockout. Inserting a USB cable for charging also deactivates the lockout.

In Ramping Mode (Group 2):

  • ON/OFF: A single click turns the headlamp on or off.
  • Change Brightness: While on, pressing and holding the switch steplessly adjusts brightness between Moonlight and Turbo. Pressing the switch again within 1.5 seconds reverses the ramping direction. The light flashes once when it reaches the highest or lowest brightness level.
  • Other functions (Turbo, Strobe, Electronic Lockout) work the same as in Group 1.

Toggle between Group 1 and Group 2:

  • While the headlamp is on, four clicks will switch between Group 1 and Group 2.

Usage Features

The HS40 is designed with several features to enhance its usability and ensure safety:

  • Powerful Illumination: Equipped with an SST40 LED, it provides a strong and consistent light output suitable for various tasks and environments.
  • Automatic Stepdown: To prevent overheating, especially during prolonged use in Turbo or High modes, the headlamp automatically steps down to a lower brightness level. This is a normal protective mechanism.
  • Battery Compatibility: The HS40 is specifically designed for use with an 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery.
  • Correct Battery Installation: Users must ensure the anode (+) side of the battery faces towards the head/LED when installing it.
  • Preventing Accidental Activation: To avoid unwanted activation during storage or transport, the tail cap can be unscrewed by half a turn. This also helps prevent battery drain while the headlamp is in standby.
  • Low Power Indicator: The headlamp provides an indication of battery status. If the battery power is insufficient, the headlamp will remain in a lower mode, signaling the need for recharging or replacement.
  • Circuit Protection: The device is protected against improper battery installation. It also automatically steps down to lower modes when the 18650 battery's power is low and turns off when the voltage drops below 2.7V, prompting the user to replace or recharge the battery.
  • Robust Construction: The headlamp body is made from aerospace-grade 6061 aluminum alloy, CNC manufactured and hard-anodized to military-grade specification type III. This anti-abrasive finish ensures a solid build, anti-crash geometry, and improved heat exchange.
  • Durable Lens: It features a toughened mineral glass lens, which is scratch and wear-resistant.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the Sofirn HS40:

  • Battery Care:
    • Sofirn Ltd. recommends using high-quality brand batteries. Damage caused by battery leakage will void the warranty.
    • If the headlamp will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent self-discharge or accidental activation.
    • To prevent self-discharge or accidental activation during storage or transportation, unscrew the tailcap by half a turn or remove the battery.
  • Thread Lubrication: Every six months, the threads should be wiped with a clean cloth and then coated with a thin layer of silicone grease to maintain smooth operation and waterproofness.
  • O-ring Replacement: To ensure a proper level of waterproofness, worn-out O-rings should be replaced with approved spares.
  • Cleaning Contacts: Dirty battery contacts can impair the headlamp's performance. Regularly clean the contact points with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol if you experience issues like flickering, intermittent shine, or failure to turn on.
  • Initial Use: If the headlamp does not turn on upon first use, remember to remove the insulation sticker from the battery.
  • Warranty and Support: Disassembling the sealed head can damage the headlamp and voids the warranty. If problems persist after troubleshooting, users should refer to the warranty policy and contact their authorized distributor or Sofirn directly for assistance or replacement within the warranty period.
