Overview

The HS-MB1 is a distribution panel designed for use in a multi-room audio/video system, serving as a central hub for various input and output connections. It is not a standalone device and requires connection to an HS-AC1 power supply for operation.

Function Description:

The HS-MB1 acts as an interface for managing audio, video, and control signals across multiple zones. It supports connections for keypads (HS-KP1), AV wall ports (HS-WV1), digital media wall ports (HS-WD1), and component video baluns (CAV-CVB1). The device allows for the distribution of audio and video sources to different zones and facilitates communication with control keypads. It also includes provisions for connecting doorbells and external chimes, integrating them into the system. Firmware updates for the HS-MB1 itself and connected keypads can be performed via an RS-232C connection. The system is scalable, allowing for the connection of up to 16 keypads by adding additional HS-MB1 units in a stack configuration.

Important Technical Specifications:

    • DB1, DB2, CHIME: Wire requirements: Copper Wire AWG 26 - 18, outer diameter: 3 mm (0.12 inches) maximum, strip away: 10 mm (0.4 inches).
    • RS-232C (DB9 Straight): For stack connection and service.
  • General:
    • DC Power Consumption (when HS-KP1, HS-WV1, HS-WA1, HS-WD1, and CAV-CVB1 are not connected):
      • DC 19.5 V / 0.6 A (ZONE 1-4), 0.1 A (ZONE 5-8).
      • DC 10 V / 0.3 A.
    • Operating Temperature: 0°C - 30°C (32°F - 86°F).
    • Storage Temperature: -20°C - 60°C (-4°F - 140°F).
    • Dimensions (w/h/d): 290 x 250 x 55 mm (11 1/2 x 9 7/8 x 21 3/4 inches).
    • Mass: 2 kg (4 lbs 6 1/2 oz.).
  • CAT5 Cable Length: The combined length of two longest cables connecting the HS-MB1 to an AV Wall Port (HS-WV1) and a Keypad (HS-KP1) can extend up to 200 feet. The combined length of the cable connecting the HS-MB1 to the Digital Media Wall Port (HS-WD1) and the longest cable connecting to a Keypad (HS-KP1) can extend up to 200 feet. The length of the longest cable connecting the HS-MB1 to a Component Video Balun (CAV-CVB1) can extend up to 200 feet.

Usage Features:

  • Zone Management: The HS-MB1 supports up to 8 zones for audio and video distribution. For zones 5-8, an additional HS-AC1 power supply is required.
  • Keypad Integration: RJ45 terminals are provided for connecting HS-KP1 keypads, allowing for control and interaction with the system.
  • AV Wall Port Connectivity: Audio and video signals from HS-WV1 AV wall ports can be input via dedicated RJ45 terminals.
  • Digital Media Port Connectivity: Digital media signals from HS-WD1 digital media wall ports can be input via dedicated RJ45 terminals.
  • Component Video Balun Support: Component video signals can be output via RJ45 terminals to CAV-CVB1 baluns.
  • Doorbell and Chime Integration: The device allows for connecting up to two doorbells (DS3B, DS3NB, BD3BN, D3BN, LE-D, LE-DA models) and an external chime (LA-126WH). Mode and gain switches are available for doorbell configuration and sensitivity adjustment.
  • System Expansion: Multiple HS-MB1 units can be stacked to expand the system, supporting up to 16 keypads in a single network. IDE cables are used for connecting additional distribution panels.
  • Power Supply: The HS-MB1 is powered by an HS-AC1 power supply. It is crucial to use the supplied HS-AC1 to prevent malfunctions.
  • DC IN Indicator: An LED indicator shows the DC IN status.

Maintenance Features:

  • Service Position and Extension Cables: For servicing, the HS-MB1 cannot be repaired singly as it has no power supply. It must be connected to an HS-AC1. Extension cables (Part No. J-2501-199-A and 1-828-223-11) are used to connect the MAIN board and VIDEO board for easier access during repairs.
  • Firmware Updates: Firmware for the HS-MB1 and connected HS-KP1 keypads can be updated via an RS-232C cross cable connected to a computer. Specific procedures are outlined for updating the distribution panel and individual keypads.
  • Safety Check-out: After any service, a safety check, including an AC leakage test, must be performed to ensure the unit is safe for the customer.
  • Chip Component Replacement: Disconnected chip components should not be reused. Tantalum capacitors may be damaged by heat.
  • Unleaded Solder: Boards using unleaded solder are marked with "LF." Unleaded solder has a higher melting point and strong viscosity, requiring careful soldering to avoid solder bridges.
  • Safety-Related Components: Components identified with a mark or dotted line with a mark on schematic diagrams and in the parts list are critical for safety and must be replaced with specified Sony parts.
