Overview

The Sony ICF-SW7600 is a versatile LW/MW/SW/FM Stereo PLL Synthesized Receiver, designed for worldwide band coverage and precise tuning.

Function Description

The ICF-SW7600 operates as a multi-band radio receiver, capable of receiving Long Wave (LW), Medium Wave (MW), Short Wave (SW), and FM stereo broadcasts. It utilizes a Quartz controlled PLL (Phase Locked Loop) synthesizer system with a microcomputer for accurate and easy pinpoint tuning, with the tuned frequency digitally displayed.

Key features include:

  • Direct Tuning: Allows users to tune into a station by directly inputting its frequency.
  • Manual Tuning: Enables precise tuning even if the exact frequency is unknown.
  • Scan Tuning: Automatically searches for and stops on receivable stations within a specified frequency range.
  • Preset Tuning: Up to 10 stations (FM and AM combined) can be stored for quick, button-touch access.
  • Fine Tuning Control: Provides precise adjustment for difficult-to-receive stations, particularly useful for SSB transmissions.
  • SSB (Single Side Band) Reception: Capable of receiving SSB transmissions, which are popular in ham and business radio, offering improved signal intelligibility. It supports both Lower Side Band (LSB) and Upper Side Band (USB) modes, as well as CW (Continuous Wave) reception.
  • Timer Standby: Allows the radio to automatically turn on at a desired time to receive a preset station.
  • Sleep Timer: Automatically turns off the radio after 65 minutes, useful for listening before sleep.
  • Recording Output: Features a TAPE REC OUT jack and a REMOTE control jack, enabling connection to an optional Sony TCM-27 cassette-corder for recording programs at a desired time.
  • Sensitivity Selector (SENS DX - LOCAL): Helps improve reception by adjusting sensitivity, with DX for distant stations and LOCAL for strong local signals to prevent distortion.
  • Tone Selector (MUSIC/NEWS): Optimizes audio output for either music or human voice (news) for clearer listening.
  • MW Channel Step Selection: The MW channel step can be switched between 9 kHz and 10 kHz to match the frequency allocation system of different countries (e.g., North America, South America use 10 kHz; other countries use 9 kHz).
  • Key Protect Function: Prevents accidental changes to the receiving station by disabling front panel buttons.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Circuit System: FM: Superheterodyne; AM: Dual conversion superheterodyne.

Usage Features

  • Ease of Use: The digital display and PLL synthesizer system make tuning straightforward.
  • Portability: Designed for portable use with battery power and a compact form factor, including a carrying case.
  • Versatile Power Options: Can be powered by internal batteries, house current via an AC adaptor, or a 12 V car battery with an optional cord.
  • External Antenna Support: Includes an EXT ANT jack for connecting optional external antennas (like the supplied SW compact antenna or other commercially available antennas) to enhance reception, especially in challenging environments like steel-frame buildings or mountainous areas.
  • Stand: Features a rear stand for convenient tabletop placement.
  • Display Illumination: A LIGHT button illuminates the display window for about 15 seconds for viewing in low light.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement: All four AA (R6) batteries should be replaced when sound becomes weak or distorted. It's important to do this within ten minutes to prevent the erasure of preset stations and current time, which are backed up by the built-in computer.
  • Cleaning: The casing should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution. Abrasive cleansers or chemical solvents should be avoided to prevent marring the casing.
  • Environmental Considerations:
    • Avoid leaving the unit near heat sources, in direct sunlight, or in places with excessive dust or mechanical shock.
    • Operate within a temperature range of 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F) to ensure proper display and frequency function.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.
    • Do not open the cabinet; refer servicing to qualified personnel.
    • If any solid object or liquid falls into the unit, remove batteries and have it checked by qualified personnel.
    • Keep personal credit cards and spring-wound watches away from the speaker due to its strong magnet.
    • When using an external antenna, disconnect its AC power adaptor immediately if there is lightning.
    • When receiving MW or LW without an external antenna, disconnect any SW external antenna to ensure the built-in ferrite bar antenna functions correctly.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides solutions for common issues such as no power, dim display, no sound, weak reception, and problems with tuning or timer functions.
