7.VibrationTroubleshooting
A.Troubleshootingvibrationproblemscanbeverychallengingandtimeconsuming.Mostdigital
dynamicbalancingequipmentcanalsobeusedtotrackdownvibrationproblems.Thedigital
dynamicbalancingequipmentcandisplaytheamplitudeandfrequencyofthevibrationwhichwillhelp
determinethevibrationsource.Whilevibrationproblemsareoccasionallycausedbythepropeller,
theyareusuallycausedbyotherthings.Belowisalistofotherpossiblesourcesofvibration:
(1)Engine
(2)Worn,old,crackedorlooseenginemounts
(3)Crackedorlooseenginemountstructure
(4)Crackedorbrokenspinnerbulkheads
(5)Looseorimproperlymountedenginecowlings
(6)Loosecowlaps
(7)Looselandinggeardoors
(8)Outofbalanceelevators
(9)Loosecontrolyokes
(10)Exhauststacktouchingenginecowling
(11)Componentinenginecompartmentthatistouchingenginecowling
8.UnusualAircraftVibration
A.Apparentlyexcessivevibrationfeltduringnormalaircraftoperation.
CAUTION:Ifavibrationstartssuddenlyand/orisaccompaniedbytheleakingofred
dyedoilfromthepropeller,determinethecauseofthevibrationand/or
oilleakagebeforecontinuingpropelleroperation.
(1)PossibleCauses:
(a)Ifthepropellerisbelievedtobethecauseofthevibration,itistypicallyduetoimproper
balance,bladetrack,orlinkageproblemswithinthepropellerassembly.
(b)Whenapropelleristhecauseofvibration,theaircrafttypicallyvibratesthroughoutthe
entireRPMrangealthoughtheintensityofthevibrationmayvarywiththeRPM.Ifa
vibrationoccursatonlyoneRPMorwithinalimitedRPMrange,thevibrationisnot
normallyduetoapropellerproblem.
(2)CorrectiveAction:
(a)Ifthepropellerissuspectedasthecauseofthevibration,thefollowingproceduresshould
beperformed:

Theidealtroubleshootingmethodistotemporarilyreplacethepropellerwithonethat
isknowntobegoodandisthesamemodelandtestytheaircraft.Ifthevibration
iseliminated,thepropellerishighlysuspectandshouldbesenttoanFAAapproved
Part145PropellerRepairStationorinternationalequivalentbypersonneltrainedto
overhaulMcCauleycompositepropellersforevaluation.

Ifareplacementpropellerisunavailable,checkthefollowing:
a
Propellerimbalancecanbethecauseofvibration.Performadynamicbalance
onthepropeller.Ifthepropellercannotbesuccessfullydynamicallybalanced,
itshouldberemovedandsenttoanFAAapprovedPart145PropellerRepair
StationorinternationalequivalentbypersonneltrainedtooverhaulMcCauley
compositepropellersforevaluation.
