4.CosmeticFieldRepair
A.Acosmeticeldrepairisavailabletorepairsmallnicks,gouges,scrapes,ormissingmaterialonthe
propellerbladecamberorfacesides.ReferenceT able603toidentifycompositematerialdamage
thatcanberepairedbyusingacosmeticeldrepair.
NOTE:Cosmeticeldrepairsmaybeaccomplishedwiththepropellerinstalledontheengine/
airplane.However,abetterresultmaybeachievedifthepropellerisremovedfromthe
enginesothattheareaofrepaircanbeheldlevelwhilethenishingputtycures.The
nishingputtyhasatendencytorunifappliedtoasurfacethatisnotlevel.
NOTE:Materialmaybemissingfromthepropellerbladeasaresultofanick,gougeorscrape.The
intentofthisrepairistoweathersealthedamagedareatopreventcontinueddegradation
andallowthepropellerbladetocontinueinserviceuntiloverhaul.
NOTE:Cosmeticsurfacedamageconsistsofdamagewhichinnowayaffectsthestructural
integrityofthereinforcingplies.Examplesofcosmeticdamagewouldincludescratches,
nicks,andgougesthatdonotextendintotheunderlyingcarbonber.
(1)Cleanthedamagedareawithacleanclothwetwithisopropylalcoholandallowtodry.
(2)Lightlysandthedamagedareausing120to180gritsandpapertoremoveanyroughorupturned
edges.Donotsandintothecompositebers.
(3)Cleanthedamagedareaagainwithacleanclothwetwithisopropylalcoholandallowtodry.
(4)MixtheMetalGlazenishingputtyaccordingtothemanufacturer'sinstructions.
NOTE:RefertoT able702,AdhesivesandSealantsforthenishingputtymanufacturer
information.
(5)Applythemixedputtyusingasmallbrushorapplicatorsticktotherepairarea.Applyonly
enoughputtytocoatandsealthearea.Itisnotnecessarytocompletelyllthedamagedarea
leveltothesurfaceoftheexistingappliednishcoatings.
(6)Placeasquareofwaxedpaperovertherepair,sufcienttocovertheputtyandsecurewithtape.
Thepurposeofthewaxedpaperistoactasareleaselmandproduceasmoothlevelnishon
thepropellerblade.
(7)Allowtheputtytocureundisturbedinaccordancewiththemanufacturer'sinstructions.
(a)Thepropellermustnotbeallowedtoenterserviceuntilfullstrengthoftheputtyisattained.
(8)Removethewaxedpaperandsecuringtapeaftertheputtyhascured.
(9)Cleantherepairedareawithacleanclothwetwithisopropylalcoholandallowtodry.
(10)Lightlysandtherepairedareaofthepropellerbladesurfacetocontourusing120to180grit
sandpaperfollowedby220gritsandpaper.Onlyremoveexcessputtythatisabovethepropeller
bladecontour.Donottrytoblend/smoothoutarepairedareathatisbelowthepropellerblade
contour.
(11)Cleantherepairedareawithacleanclothwetwithisopropylalcoholandallowtodry.
(12)T ouchupthepaint.RefertoCleaning/Painting/ProtectiveTreatments,BladePaintingforpaint
touch-upinstructions.
5.CarbonFiberPlyRepair
A.Ifacarbonberplyofthepropellerbladeisdamaged,thepropellermustberemovedfromservice
andscrapped.Norepairsarepermittedonpropellerbladesthatarefoundtohaveadamagedcarbon
berply.
6.LeadingEdgeGuardRepair
