Awornordamagedbladecanbreak,andapiece
ofthebladecouldbethrownintotheoperator's
orbystander'sarea,resultinginseriouspersonal
injuryordeath.
Inspectthebladeperiodicallyforwearor
damage.
Donottrytostraightenabladethatisbent.
Neverweldabrokenorcrackedblade.
Replaceawornordamagedbladewitha
newTorobladetoensurecontinuedsafety
certicationoftheproduct.
Considerthe2areaswhencheckingandservicingthecutting
blade:thesailandthecuttingedge.Bothcuttingedgesand
thesailcontributetoagoodquality-of-cut.Thisistheturned
upportionontheoppositesideofthecuttingedge.Thesail
isimportantbecauseitpullsthegrassupstraight,thereby
producinganevencut.However,thesailwillgraduallywear
downduringoperation,andthisconditionisnormal.Asthe
sailwearsdown,thequality-of-cutwilldegradesomewhat,
evenifthecuttingedgesaresharp.Thecuttingedgeofthe
blademustbesharpsothatthegrassiscutratherthantorn.
Adullcuttingedgeisevidentwhenthetipsofthegrass
appearbrownandshredded.Sharpenthecuttingedgesto
correctthiscondition.
1.Positionthemachineonalevelsurface.Raisethe
cuttingunit,engagetheparkingbrake,putthetraction
pedalinneutral,putthecutting-unit,driveswitchin
theOFFposition,stoptheengine,removetheignition
key,andapplythelift-armlatches.
2.Examinethecuttingendsofthebladecarefully,
especiallywheretheatandcurvedpartsoftheblade
meet(Figure28).

Important:Sharpenonlythetopsideofthe
cuttingedgeandmaintaintheoriginalcutting
angletoensuresharpness(Figure29).Theblade
willremainbalancedifthesameamountofmetal
isremovedfrombothcuttingedges.

CheckingandCorrecting
MismatchofBlades
Ifthereismismatchbetweentheblades,thegrasswillappear
streakedwhenitiscut.Youmustcorrectthisproblemby
makingsurethatthebladesarestraightandalloftheblades
arecuttingonthesameplane.
1.Usinga1meter(3foot)long,carpenterslevel,nda
levelsurfaceontheshopoor.
2.Raisetheheightofcuttothehighestposition;referto
AdjustingtheHeightofCut(page12).
3.Lowerthecuttingunitontotheatsurface.Remove
thecoversfromthetopofthecuttingunit.
4.Rotatethebladesuntiltheendsfaceforwardand
backward.
5.Measurefromtheoortothefronttipofthecutting
edge;recordthisdimension.
6.Rotatethesamebladesothattheoppositeendis
forward,andmeasureagain.
7.Thedifferencebetweenthedimensionsmustnot
exceed3mm(1/8inch).
Note:Ifthedimensionexceeds13mm(1/2inch),
replacethebladebecauseitisbent.
8.Repeatstep5and6fortheotherblades.
9.Comparethemeasurementsoftheouterbladeswith
thecenterblade.
10.Ifthecenterbladeismorethan10mm(3/8inch)
lowerthantheouterblades,proceedtostep12and
