You have purchased the latest in handheld Conductivity-Salinity-pH-
Temperature instrumentation. We trust that your new MC-81 will give you
many years of reliable service.
The MC-81 is a breeze to operate. This manual has been designed to help you
get started, and also contains some handy application tips. If at any stage you
require assistance, please contact either your local TPS representative or the
TPS factory in Brisbane.
The manual is divided into the following sections:
1. Table of Contents
Each major section of the handbook is clearly listed. Sub-sections have also
been included to enable you to find the information you need at a glance.
2. Introduction
The introduction has a diagram and explanation of the display and controls
of the MC-81. It also contains a full listing of all of the items that you
should have received with your MC-81. Please take the time to read this
section, as it explains some of items that are mentioned in subsequent
sections.
3. Main Section
The main section of the handbook provides complete details of the MC-81,
including operating modes, calibration, troubleshooting, specifications, and
warranty terms.
4. Appendices
Appendices containing background information and application notes are
provided at the back of this manual.

    What does 'Factory Cal. Fail See Handbook' mean on my TPS Measuring Instruments?

      If your TPS Measuring Instruments displays 'Factory Cal. Fail See Handbook', it means that the EEPROM chip which contains the factory calibration information has failed. The unit must be returned to TPS for service. Conductivity and Salinity readings will be accurate after a full two point calibration. pH readings will be accurate after a 2-point calibration (use manual temperature compensation). Temperature readings may be up to ±5oC incorrect.

      If your TPS Measuring Instruments shows a flashing symbol, it indicates that the battery voltage is below 7.50 volts. You should replace the battery soon. The unit will automatically switch off when the battery falls below 6.00 volts.

      If you get inaccurate readings with your TPS Measuring Instruments, even after successful calibration, it could be due to a build-up of dirt or oily material on the electrode wires, or the platinum-black coating may have worn off. You should clean the electrode. If the platinum-black coating is worn off, the electrode requires replatinisation.

      If your TPS Measuring Instruments readings are low or near zero, it could be due to a build-up of dirt or oily material on the electrode wires, the electrode not being immersed deeply enough, or a faulty electrode. Clean the electrode. Ensure the electrode is immersed at least to the vent hole in the white plastic cover. If the problem persists, the electrode may need to be returned to the factory for repair or replacement.

      If you see 'Memory Failed Calib. Lost Memory Reset ! You MUST Re-Cal.' on your TPS Measuring Instruments, it means that the user calibration settings have been lost or corrupted. Re-calibrate the instrument. Both a Zero and a Standard calibration will be required for Conductivity and Salinity. A full 2 point calibration will be required for pH and a 1 point calibration for temperature.

      If you are experiencing unstable readings on your TPS Measuring Instruments, it could be due to several reasons: a blocked reference junction, a dirty glass bulb, a bubble in the glass bulb, a faulty connection to the meter, the reference junction not being immersed, or KCl crystals around the reference junction inside the electrolyte chamber. Clean the reference junction. Clean the glass bulb. Flick the electrode to remove any bubble. Check the connectors and replace if necessary. Ensure that the bulb AND the reference junction are fully immersed. Rinse the electrolyte chamber with warm distilled water until the crystals are dissolved, then replace the electrolyte.

      If the temperature is inaccurate on your TPS Measuring Instruments and cannot be calibrated, it could be due to a faulty connector, a faulty temperature sensor in the conductivity sensor, or a faulty instrument. Check the connector and replace if necessary. Fit a new conductivity sensor. Note that the conductivity readout may still be accurate. If the problem persists, return the instrument to the factory for repair.

      If the 2 Point calibration fails on your TPS Measuring Instruments (Slope is less than 85.0%), it could be due to several reasons: using an incorrect primary buffer, the glass bulb not being clean, the electrode being aged, the connector being damp, or inaccurate buffers. Ensure that you are using the buffers which the MC-81 has been set to automatically recognise. Clean the glass bulb. Attempt rejuvenation. If not successful, replace the electrode. Dry the connector in a warm place. Replace the buffers.

      If the 1 Point calibration fails on your TPS Measuring Instruments (Asymmetry is greater than +/-1.00 pH), it may be because the reference junction is blocked or the reference electrolyte is contaminated. Clean the reference junction and flush with distilled water and replace the electrolyte.
