Overview

This document describes the Trane XR15 4TWR5 Split System Heat Pump, designed for residential use with capacities ranging from 1 1/2 to 5 tons. It is an outdoor unit that functions as a heat pump, providing both heating and cooling capabilities.

Function Description:

The Trane XR15 4TWR5 is a split system heat pump, meaning it consists of an outdoor unit and an indoor unit (air handler or furnace coil, not detailed in this document but referenced for system compatibility). Its primary function is to provide year-round comfort by either cooling or heating the indoor space. In cooling mode, it extracts heat from the indoor air and releases it outdoors. In heating mode, it reverses the process, extracting heat from the outdoor air (even in cold temperatures) and transferring it indoors. The system is designed to operate efficiently across a wide range of outdoor ambient temperatures, with cooling capabilities down to 55°F as shipped, and further extendable to 20°F with the addition of an evaporator defrost control and TXV. The unit is charged from the factory for up to 15 feet of piping, simplifying installation.

Usage Features:

The XR15 4TWR5 incorporates several features aimed at enhancing user experience and system performance. It utilizes a CLIMATUFF® compressor, known for its reliability and efficiency. The unit boasts high efficiency ratings, up to 17.0 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and 9.0 HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor), which can lead to energy savings. The all-aluminum Spine Fin™ coil is a key component for efficient heat transfer, designed for durability. For quiet operation, the unit is designed with low vibration and noise characteristics, and rubber isolators are available as an accessory to further minimize sound transmission to the mounting frame or pad.

The system is compatible with COMFORT-R™ mode, which is a Trane feature designed to enhance dehumidification during cooling cycles, providing improved comfort in humid conditions. For control, the unit can be integrated with various thermostats, including cooling-only and heat/cooling options (manual and automatic changeover), with sub-bases and locking covers available. The unit's design includes a DURATUFF™ base, which facilitates fast and complete drainage, contributing to its weatherproof qualities. The cabinet itself is constructed from heavy-gauge, G90 galvanized steel and finished with a glossy, corrosion-resistant powder paint on all louvers and panels, ensuring long-term aesthetic appeal and protection against environmental elements. The tarpaulin gray cabinet with an anthracite gray badge and cap provides a modern and robust appearance.

Maintenance Features:

Several design elements and optional accessories contribute to the ease of maintenance and longevity of the Trane XR15 4TWR5. The QUICK-SESS™ cabinet design provides convenient service access to internal components and refrigerant connections, while also offering full coil protection. This design simplifies routine checks and repairs. The unit includes internal compressor high/low pressure and temperature protection, safeguarding the compressor from extreme operating conditions and extending its lifespan. A liquid line filter/drier is factory installed, which helps to keep the refrigerant system clean and free of moisture and contaminants, crucial for efficient and reliable operation.

The Demand Defrost with Diagnostics feature is a significant maintenance advantage, as it intelligently manages the defrost cycle, only activating when necessary, which saves energy and reduces wear on components. The diagnostics capability can assist technicians in troubleshooting. Weatherguard™ fasteners are used throughout the unit, providing enhanced resistance to corrosion and ensuring secure assembly over time. For specific models (018-036 & 061), a start kit is shipped with the unit, and a compressor sump heat is included, which helps prevent liquid refrigerant from accumulating in the compressor during off-cycles, protecting it from damage during startup, especially in colder conditions. Hard start kits are also available as an accessory to assist compressor motor startup in areas with marginal power supply, long linesets, or low ambient conditions.

Optional accessories like the Anti-short Cycle Timer prevent rapid cycling of the compressor, which can extend its life, particularly in areas with unstable power or commercial applications. The Extreme Condition Mounting Kit allows for secure mounting of the condensing unit to a frame or pad, preventing damage in high wind areas or on commercial rooftops. Service valve covers are also included, protecting these critical connection points. The unit undergoes 100% line run testing and S.E.E.T. design testing, ensuring quality and reliability before leaving the factory. Extended warranties are available, offering additional peace of mind regarding the unit's long-term performance and maintenance.
