Overview

The XPERT-PRO is a microcontroller-based electrical power meter designed for measuring and displaying various electrical parameters. It features a 128x64 backlit LCD for sequential display of information and four front-facing LEDs: one for KWh energy calibration, one for RS485 communication status, and two for relay status.

Function Description

The XPERT-PRO is a versatile meter suitable for three-phase four-wire, three-phase three-wire, and single-phase two-wire systems. It employs the three-wattmeter method for three-phase four-wire systems and the two-wattmeter method for three-phase three-wire systems to calculate system KVA and KW. The unit measures three-phase voltages, currents, frequency, power factors, and individual harmonic data as histograms, including Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). It also captures individual current and voltage waveforms for all three phases. Based on these inputs, it calculates system KVA, KW, and KWh.

The device supports demand measurement for KVA or KW, which is site-selectable, with an integration period of 30 or 15 minutes. It provides two relay contacts for alarm/trip functions, which are programmable for various parameters, including sliding demand powers (KW and KVA). An RS-485 port is available for connection to SCADA/EMS systems, facilitating communication with an RX/TX LED indicator. The meter also offers a KWh Energy Pulse output on an LED, providing 1000 impulses per KWh.

Usage Features

The XPERT-PRO offers an easy-to-use interface for programming all field-programmable parameters. Users can navigate through programming and run modes using dedicated keys.

  • Installation Type Selection: The unit supports three electrical installation types: 3P4W, 3P3W, and 1P2W. Users can select the appropriate type during commissioning.
  • CT and PT Ratio Selection: The CT (Current Transformer) and PT (Potential Transformer) ratios are site-selectable, allowing for accurate current and voltage measurements. CT Primary can be set from 5 to 5000, and CT Secondary can be set to 1A or 5A.
  • Device ID and Baud Rate Setting: For RS485 communication, the device ID can be set from 1 to 255, and the baud rate can be selected from 4800, 9600, or 19200.
  • Alarm Parameter Programming: The meter has two relays (K1 and K2) for alarm contacts, rated 3A @ 230 VAC. These relays are individually programmable for various alarm parameters such as Demand, Avg. Volt, Avg. Amps, KVA, KW, KVAR, and PF. Users can set alarm values (from 5 to 5000, or 60 to 100 for PF) and time delays (from 5 to 180 seconds, fixed at 2 seconds for Demand).
  • Hysteresis for Relays: To prevent frequent switching near the alarm value, a 5% band (hysteresis) is added to the programmed value for most parameters. For PF, the operation is reversed, and hysteresis is not applied directly, but a multiplying factor of 100 is used.
  • Auto Scrolling: The Run Mode pages can be set to auto-scroll with a configurable scroll second from 5 to 12 seconds. If set to zero, the display will freeze.
  • Time Measurement: The unit supports two types of time measurements: Run Hour (time since power reception) and Load Run Hour (time since the load receives energy). Users can select between these options.
  • Energy Reset: The three energies (KWh, KVAh, and KVARh) for both EB (Electricity Board) and DG (Diesel Generator) can be reset to zero.
  • Demand Power Reset: Both KW_D and KVA_D, including their maximum demand values, can be reset to zero.
  • Run Mode Display: In Run Mode, the meter displays various parameters on different pages. Power values auto-scale from Kilo to Mega when KVA exceeds 10,000. The display includes phase-to-phase and phase-to-neutral voltages, R-Y-B phase currents, individual and system power factors (with "LG" for lagging and "LD" for leading), KVA, KW, KVAR, KVAh, KWh, KVARh for both EB and DG, instantaneous and maximum demand, odd harmonics (3rd to 15th) for voltage and current in percentage form, THD for voltage and current, and waveforms for voltage and current in each phase to identify harmonic distortion. The 30th display page shows the relay status, including the programmed and run-time values for the assigned alarm parameters.

Maintenance Features

The XPERT-PRO is designed for trouble-free service once correctly installed. Key considerations for maintenance and longevity include:

  • Correct Phase Sequence and CT Polarity: Ensuring the phase sequence is R-Y-B and the CT secondary polarity is correct is crucial for accurate operation.
  • Control Fuses: Connecting the three phases to the unit through 1.0 Amp control fuses protects the internal electronics from damage due to severe overvoltages or phase faults.
  • Relay Contact Usage: When using the relay contacts, it is important to use 230V AC coils in contactors and avoid switching small loads directly from the XPERT-PRO relay contacts to prevent issues like continuous hum or failure to switch off. Instead, use the relay contacts to switch an auxiliary contactor, and then connect the load to the contactor contacts.
  • Solid State Design: The unit is fully solid-state, contributing to its reliability and long operational life.
  • Backlight Management: In ideal conditions, the backlight automatically turns off after 5 minutes and reactivates when any key is pressed, conserving energy and extending display life.
