ToInstall Belt:
A. From the underside of the
deck, install one end of the belt in
the groove of the engine
crankshaft pulley (H, Figure 5-9).
Push the other end of the belt
through the deck opening at the
front of the engine and pull it
toward the drive pulley (A, Figure
5-9).
B. Lower the front of the mower
to the ground.
C. Press down (hard) on the rear
of the drive pulley (A, Figure 5-9)
and slip the belt over the front of
the pulley. Rotate the pulley in a
clockwise direction to help seat
the belt in the pulley groove.
D. Look down through the deck
opening at the front of the engine
and make sure the belt is still
seated in the groove of the engine
crankshaft pulley (H).
E. Raise the front of the mower
and secure it in place.
F. Reinstall the grass shield (if so
equipped) and tighten the three
mounting screws securely (see
Figure 5-10).
G. Reinstall the mower blade and
coupling assembly by following
the blade installation instructions
on page 38.
H. Lower the front of the mower
to the ground.
I. Remove the Phillips screw from
the spring retaining bracket and
reinstall the front deck cover using
the two Phillips head screws.
DO NOT START ENGINE
WITHOUT COVER SECURELY
INSTALLED.

WARNING
Before performingany main-
tenance procedures, stopthe
engine, wait for all moving
parts to stop, and allow the
engine to cool. Disconnect
thespark plugwire and move
it away from the spark plug.
Remove the ignition key on
electricstart models.
A loss of traction may be caused
by a broken or wom belt. To in-
stall a new belt, follow the removal
and installation instructions pre-
sented below.
NOTE: The drive belt is self-ten-
sioning and does not require
tension checks or adjustments.
To Remove Belt:
A. Stop the engine and wait for
all moving parts to stop.
Disconnect the spark plug wire
and move it away from the spark
plug. Remove the ignition key on
electric start models.
B. Using a Phillips head screw-
driver, remove the two screws
which secure the front cover.
Remove the cover by pulling the
cover upward and forward.
C. Temporarily install one of the
cover screws into the spring
retaining bracket (H, Figure 5-6).
D. Cut a worn or damaged belt to
remove.
NOTE: If removing a belt which
will later be reinstalled, reverse
the steps given for belt
installation.
IMPORTANT: If tipping the
mower during a maintenance
procedure, tip the mower rear-
ward rather than forward or to
either side.
