short bytes_read = ecrRead(char *buffer, short size);
Size is the maximum number of bytes to read, and buffer is a pointer to the data
area. Each invocation of ecrRead() will transfer data from the port into the
buffer, and return the number of bytes actually read or a negative value if an error
occurred.
