This document describes the AR, ARFU series of external vibrators manufactured by Wacker Neuson, designed for compacting concrete.
Function Description
The AR, ARFU external vibrators are electric motors that drive an eccentric weight, generating centrifugal forces that adjust the balance of the eccentric weights and the number of eccentric discs. These devices are designed to be compacted into fresh concrete, which is how concrete gets its solidity. The eccentric discs are symmetrically mounted to avoid damage to formworks. The Bodyguard® system connects the main supply line with the converter and monitors the operating currents flowing in and out. It protects the operator from electric shock in case of failure (leakage currents). An indicator light illuminates in red when the machine is closed correctly and the machine functions correctly. If the indicator light doesn't illuminate when a leakage current occurred inside the machine, the main side power supply is cut off and the converter locked, preventing the machine from operating. The power supply remains cut off until the error is remedied. The Bodyguard® system features a test button to check its functionality. The inverter converts a current rectifier and a d.c.-a.c. converter monitored by an electronic control. The current rectifier converts the input voltage (AC single phase) to DC voltage. The d.c.-a.c. converter converts the generated DC voltage to three-phase current (AC three phase). When the machine is switched on, the control electronics provide a soft start and thus prevent critical starting currents.

Usage Features
- Safe Operation: The operator's manual emphasizes the importance of proper and economic operation, understanding and observing safety guidelines, and increasing availability and service life. It must be carried out by Wacker Neuson service or technically trained personnel.
- Storage: The machine must be stored in a dry and dust-free place, not exposed to aggressive substances, and away from mechanical vibrations. The places prone to rust should be oiled.
- Installation: Before installation, ensure the packaging is removed, inspect the machine for visible damage, and confirm all parts are present. The machine should be attached to the formwork with suitable fastening clamps. Electrical connection involves connecting the power cable to the terminal box, ensuring proper grounding and sealing.
- Startup: Before starting, ensure the machine and components are undamaged, fastening clamps are tight, screws and fastening equipment are secure, power and extension cable are checked, and the safety belt is in place. The mains power distribution and current regulations must be checked. The machine's power is protected by a fault current protective switch (30 mA).
- Connecting to a Generator: Unplug all plugs from the generator, start the generator, wait for approximately 5 minutes, check the ON/OFF switch on the machine, and plug the power cable into a free plug receptacle.
- Switching On/Off: The machine is switched on/off via the ON/OFF switch. The control lamp on the inverter lights green when the machine is ready for operation.
Maintenance Features
- General Maintenance: The machine must be serviced, repaired, or cleaned while it is switched off. Maintenance intervals must be observed. Safety devices must be reattached after each maintenance or repair. Missing safety devices can lead to serious injuries and total failure of the machine. Maintenance schedule and work must be observed. Worn or damaged parts must be replaced immediately. Safety stickers must be kept clean and replaced immediately if damaged or illegible. Maintenance must be performed in a dry environment (e.g., workshop).
- Personnel Qualification: Maintenance work must be performed by specially trained personnel or by the service staff of Wacker Neuson.
- Maintenance Schedule:
- Daily: Visual inspection of all parts for damage.
- Every 20 h: Check that the power cable is in perfect condition, replace defective power cables immediately. Check the tightness of all screws on the machine and fastening screws.
- Every 150 h: Lubricate machine (cylindrical roller bearings). Clean the machine. Check the Bodyguard® for damages. Function testing the Bodyguard® with the test button.
- Cleaning: Use of improper cleaning agents may lead to fire or explosion. Do not use gasoline or any other solvents to clean the machine. High-pressure washers are not to be used for cleaning. Only use clean water for cleaning, wiping the machine dry with a cloth. The Bodyguard® should not be cleaned with high pressure or steam cleaners, nor should it be submerged in water. Do not use any fuels or solvents for cleaning.
- Lubrication: Excessive grease can conduct electricity. Wipe off excessive grease. Over-greasing alters machine behavior to the point of failure. Remove any dirt around the zerk fitting, place filled manual lever-type grease gun (DIN 1283) onto the lubrication nipple, and operate it to administer twice (1-2.0 cm³) per lubrication nipple. Wipe the area around the zerk fitting with a clean cloth.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides tables for common malfunctions, possible causes, and remedies, including issues with the machine not running, control lamp not lighting up, machine overheating, Bodyguard® indicator lights, and inverter malfunctions. For complex issues, it is recommended to contact a Wacker Neuson representative.
