Card Readers
are
capable
of reading standard 80-'column
tabulating
cards
conforming to the
Electronic Industries Association (EIA)
punched card standard RS-292.
Cards
are
read
serially,
column by column, in
either
of
two
read
modes: binary (absolute) or
automatic
(EBCDIC).
Automatic read mode switching, from
EBCDIC
to binary,
facilitates
reading
of
intermixed EBCDIC- and
binary-
punched cards.
The
photoelectric
read station reads
each
12-bit
column of
an
80-column
card.
The
data
thus sensed
are
presented to
the controlling system as a series
of
8-bit
bytes.
