Why is there no sound or picture from my Yamaha RX-V396 Receiver?

If you're not getting any sound or picture from your Yamaha Receiver, first, ensure all input and output cables are correctly connected. If the issue remains, the cables themselves might be faulty. Next, make sure you've selected the correct input source using the INPUT or TAPE/MD MON / EXT. DECODER buttons. Check that the speaker connections are secure and that the SPEAKERS setting corresponds to the speakers you're using and is set to the ON position. Also, verify that the sound isn't muted by checking the VOLUME and MUTE settings. Finally, confirm that the input source signals are compatible with the unit, such as PCM audio or Dolby Digital.
