Unit Overview
POWER AND ELECTRICAL
• Johnson Controls has over 25 years of experience
designingvariablespeeddrivesspecicallyforchiller
applications.Theresultisanextremelyreliableair-
cooledchillersystemthatoffersindustryleadingef-
ciencyatrealworldoperatingconditions,valve-less
compressor loading/unloading, excellent capacity
control,highpowerfactorandsoftstart.
• Allcontrolsandmotorstartingequipmentnecessary
forunitoperationshallbefactorywiredandfunction
tested.
• VSD Power/Control Panel includes main power
connection(s), VSD and fan motor contactors, cur-
rentoverloads,andfactorywiring.Standarddesign
includesNEMA3R(IP55)rating,powderpaintedsteel
cabinetwithhinged,latched,andgasketsealedouter
doorsequippedwithwindstrutsforsaferservicing.
• VSD section of power panel includes a dedicated
inverterforeachcompressor.
• Thepanelincludesacontroldisplayaccessdoorso
displayandcontrolfeaturescanbeaccessedwithout
openingmaincabinetdoors.
• The chillers come standard with single point power
connection.Inaddition,allmodelsaresuppliedwith
afactorymountedandwiredcontroltransformerthat
willsupplyallunitcontrolvoltagefromthemainunit
powersupply.Thetransformerutilizesscheduledline
voltageontheprimarysideandprovides115V/1Øon
secondary.
• Thestandardpowerpanelisequippedwithterminal
blockelectricalconnectionsatthepointofincoming
power.An optional factory mounted circuit breaker
isavailable,atthepointoftheincomingsinglepoint
connection,providingthemeanstodisconnectpower
andshortcircuitprotection.Theoptionallockableop-
eratinghandleextendsthroughthepowerpaneldoor
sothatpowermaybedisconnectedwithoutopening
anypaneldoors.
• ShortCircuitWithstandRatingofthechillerelectrical
enclosureis30,000Ampsforstandardterminalblock
connection. These ratings are IAW (in accordance
with)UL508.(SeeAccessoriesandOptionssection.
Theycanbeincreasedto65,000Ampsfor380&400).
• Compressormotorsarepoweredbyavariablespeed
drive. Therefore, motor current never exceeds the
ratedloadamps(RLA),providingsoftstartswithno
electricalinrush. Thiseliminates the motor heating
and stress always found with conventional motor
starters.Inaddition,byeliminatingtheheatbuildup
duringstarting,therequiredoff-timebetweenstartsis
reducedtoamaximumoftwominutes.
• Many utility companies charge an additional fee if
powerfactorisbelow0.95.Thesepowerfactoradjust-
ments/penaltiescanaffectbothregulartariffrates,as
wellasdemandcharges.AllYCIVmodelshaveafull
loaddisplacementpowerfactorof95%andmaintain
thislevelthroughouttheoperatingrange.Specica-
tionsshouldalwaysrequiretheinstallingcontractorto
beresponsibleforadditionalcosttofurnishandinstall
powerfactorcorrectioncapacitorsiftheyarenotfac-
torymountedandwired.

• Continuousfunction,microprocessorcontrolled,VSD
providesvalveless,smoothcapacitycontrolfrom100%
downto10%ofchillercapacityfortwocompressor
chillers, 100% down to 7.5% for three compressor
chillers,and100%downto5%forfourcompressor
chillers.Inaddition,eliminationoftheslidevalveand
associatedunloadingcomponentsresultedina50%
reductionincompressormovingparts.
• Compressorsaredirectdrive,semihermetic,rotary
twin-screwtype,including:mufer,temperatureactuat-
ed‘off-cycle’heater,rain-tightterminalbox,discharge
shut-offservicevalve,and precision machined cast
ironhousingmountedonelastomericisolators.
• Reliable suction-gas-cooled, high-efciency, acces-
siblehermeticcompressormotor,fullsuctiongasow
through0.006”maximummeshscreen,withinherent
internalthermaloverloadprotectionandexternalcur-
rentoverloadonallthreephases.
• Suctiongasscreenandserviceable,0.5micron full
owoillterwithinthecompressorhousing.
• Cast iron compressor housing precisely machined
foroptimal clearances and superbefciency. Entire
compressor,fromsuctiontodischargehasadesign
workingpressureof24barg(350psig)orhigher.
REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT
• Independentrefrigerantcircuitspercompressor,each
using copper refrigerant pipe formed on computer-
controlled bending machines. This eliminates over
60%ofsystempipingbrazedjointsascomparedto
designsthatusettings,resultinginahighlyreliable
andleakresistantsystem.
• Liquid line components include: liquid line shut-off
valvewithchargingport,lowsidepressurereliefde-
vice,highadsorptionremovablecorelter-drier,sight
glasswithmoisture-indicator,andelectronicexpansion
valve.
