Creating Signals
Event 1 Marker
Two different marker options are available for the signal out the Event 1 port located on
the rear panel of the ESG.
1 microsecond pulse
When you select this choice as a marker, a single 1 µs pulse is transmitted at the first
symbol of the packet. The user has the option to set the position of marker 1 relative
to the start of the packet preamble, p
o
. The offset can be negative unless you select
Omit Poll Period.
Symbol clock
When you select this choice as the marker, the symbol clock is transmitted. This is a
repeating 1 µs pulse, which is transmitted during the packet period. It does not include
the ramping portion of the burst.
Event 2 Marker
Four different marker options are available for the signal out the Event 2 port located on
the rear panel of the ESG.
Burst
When you select this choice as the marker, a marker is set high at the beginning of the
burst ramp and remains high through burst ramp down. The ALC is enabled only for the
RF burst duration, and disabled otherwise. During the off portion of the RF burst, the RF
carrier is blanked. RF blanking improves the signal quality by increasing the on/off ratio of
the RF bursts. If the burst marker is not used, and the ALC is on, the Bluetooth packets
may experience slight amplitude variation during the packet transmission. This is due to
the ALC trying to correct for the bursted transmission.
If you are not using the burst marker for Event 2, it is suggested to turn the ALC off and
use the ESG power search feature to achieve better power level accuracy. Power search
mode executes a power search routine that temporarily activates the ALC, calibrates the
power of the current RF output, and then disconnects the ALC circuitry.
When using the power search mode, it is suggested to perform the power search on a
non-bursted Bluetooth signal. A non-bursted Bluetooth signal cannot be chosen from
the Dirty Transmitter menu. From the main Bluetooth menu, generate a framed signal
with the desired packet type, and disable the Bursting Active field. Once the power
search is performed on this non-bursted signal, return to the Dirty Transmitter menu
and continue signal setup. Make sure the power settins are the same for both the main
Bluetooth menu and the Dirty Transmitter menu.
For more details about the power search feature, please refer to the E4438C ESG Vector
Signal Generator’s User’s Guide.
Packet
When you select this choice as the marker, a marker is set high with the first symbol in
the packet and remains high until the last symbol in the packet.
Payload
When you select this choice as the marker, a marker is set high beginning with the first
symbol of the payload data and remains high until the last symbol of the payload data.
Payload + CRC
When you select this choice as the marker, a marker is set high beginning with the first
symbol of the payload data and remains high until the last symbol of the 16-bit CRC that
is appended to the end of the payload data.
