4.3USINGTHEHYDRAULICRETARDER
Ahydraulicretarderisoptionalonmostmodelscoveredinthismanual.The
purposeoftheretarderistoassistinstoppingthevehicleduringstop-and-go
drivingandtocontrolthedownhillspeedofthevehicleonagrade.For
bothoftheseuses,theretarderextendsthelifeoftheservicebrakesand
enhancesvehiclecontrol.Theretarderautomaticallydisengageswhenthe
vehicleapproachesastop.
Whentheretarderenableswitchisturnedontoenabletheretardersystem,a
specialretardermodeshiftscheduleisactivated.Thisshiftscheduleallows
downshiftsathigherthanthenormalroadspeeds.Increasedcoolantow
throughthetransmissioncoolerandengineradiatoroccursduetotheraised
