8. CONFIGURATION AND SETTINGS
The H38x is configured using a series of dialogues between the board and a terminal
emulator on a personal computer (PC) or similar device. Connection is made via a TELNET
connection over the Ethernet.
The connection is used to configure, manage, and monitor the board. LED indications
provide complementary status information.
The connection can also be used to upgrade the firmware of the board should that be
necessary.
To communicate with the board you need to open a TELNET session. The first operation is
to create a new session between the board and the terminal with the IP address of the
board, following which you need to open the port.
The board is supplied with a unique Media Access Control (MAC) address which should not
be changed. It is supplied with a default Internet Protocol (IP) address of 192.168.254.100.
8.1 Login
When the session is opened, you will be have a login prompt and dialogue as shown in the
figure below. You login as either root or user, initially with the password “changeit”. Whilst
the session is in progress, your access level is indicated by either a # for root level, or a $ for
user level as shown below.

Root
User
Root level is an administrator level with privileged access. User level is for normal
operations and features restricted access. By default both levels of access are protected by
the password “changeit”.
In addition if SNMP V3 is used, independent passwords can be set for administrator and
operator.
With root level access you can:
Change all passwords
Configure the board
Configure the alarms
Download firmware
Manage the switch

With user level access, you can view the status of the board.
