The Apera Instruments TN500 Portable Turbidity Meter is a robust and intelligent device designed for accurate turbidity measurements in various water types, including drinking, ground, surface, saline, domestic, and industrial wastes. It is compliant with U.S. EPA 180.1 method, making it suitable for both on-site and laboratory use.
Function Description:
The TN500 operates on the principle of 90° scattering measurement, utilizing a tungsten filament lamp as its light source. It offers both normal and TruRead™ measurement modes. The TruRead™ mode is a key feature, automatically taking multiple consecutive readings (5, 10, 15, or 20 times) and calculating their average, minimum, and maximum values. This mode is particularly beneficial for samples with rapid settling or continuous measurement changes, providing a more reliable determination of true turbidity compared to a single reading. The instrument also includes a zero turbidity error reminder to ensure accuracy for low turbidity solutions. It supports 5 calibration points: 0 NTU, 20 NTU, 100 NTU, 400 NTU, and 800 NTU, using AMCO Polymer or Formazin solutions. Data logging can be done manually or automatically, with storage for up to 200 groups of data, which can be output to a PC via USB.

Usage Features:
- Intelligent Functions: Automatic calibration, operation navigation, parameter setup, real-time clock display, calibration date check, automatic power off, low voltage indication.
- User Interface: Large TFT color screen with distinct blue background for measurement mode and green for calibration mode. Operation guidance and reminders are provided throughout calibration, measurement, and parameter setting.
- Multi-language Operating System: English, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese.
- Calibration Procedure: The instrument allows for calibration at multiple points. Users must ensure proper handling and cleaning of calibration vials and the application of silicone oil to the vial surface to minimize light scattering. The warm-up procedure is crucial for stable measurements.
- Measurement Modes: Normal measurement provides a single reading in about 20 seconds. TruRead™ mode offers enhanced accuracy by averaging multiple readings, especially useful for unstable or rapidly settling samples.
- Data Management: Data can be manually saved or automatically logged depending on user settings. Stored data can be recalled, viewed, and deleted. The instrument provides a "FULL" reminder when storage is nearing capacity.
- Power Management: Equipped with a 3.7V rechargeable lithium battery, offering extended operation. Charging can be done via a power adapter or computer USB. Battery capacity is indicated on the display, with prompts to recharge when low.
- Parameter Setup: Users can configure various settings, including continuous measurement times, measurement unit (NTU or FTU), data logging mode, auto-power off timer, language, date, and time.
- Data Output: The Turbidimeter PC-Link software (Windows-based) allows for connection to a PC via USB. Users can refresh the connection, sync time, download data, clear data from the computer, and export data to Microsoft Excel for further analysis and printing.
Maintenance Features:
- Lamp Replacement: The tungsten filament lamp is replaceable. The manual provides clear instructions for checking the light source and replacing the lamp module using a coin and tweezers.
- Vial Handling and Cleaning: Six sample vials are included, with specific recommendations for cleaning both the inside and outside with detergent, distilled/deionized water, and sample solution. Silicone oil application and wiping with microfiber cloth and filter paper are detailed to ensure optimal light transmission and minimize smudges or scratches. Special attention is given to handling 0.0 NTU calibration solution, which can be replaced if deteriorated.
- Calibration Solution Stability: The instrument uses stable AMCO polymer standards. Users are advised on proper handling, including gentle flipping for long-unused solutions and avoiding vigorous shaking to prevent air bubbles. Formazin standards, if used, require fresh preparation due to instability.
- Robust Design: The instrument's IP67 water-resistant grade makes it suitable for harsh environments, and it comes in a rugged carrying case with all necessary accessories.
