ADJUSTMENT/MAINTENANCE
FUSE REPLACEMENT
The battery charging circuit is protected by a 25-ampere
fuse. If the fuse burns out, the battery will not be
charged. The machine may continue to function, however
the battery will weaken. Check this fuse if the battery is
not being charged.
The electrical power circuit is protected by an additional
25-ampere fuse. If this fuse burns out, neither the electric
starter nor any electrical function will operate. If the
battery is fully charged and the starter fails to operate,
check this fuse.
These fuses are part of the wiring harness and are located
in the engine compartment on the right-hand side.
1. If a burnt-out fuse is suspected, separate the fuse
holder and inspect the fuse.
2. If the fuse is burnt out, then pull out and discard the
burnt-out fuse and install a new 25-ampere fuse.
NOTE:
Never use a fuse with a rating greater than 25
amperes. Serious damage to the electrical system or a fire
could result.
3. Reconnect the fuse holder securely.
Frequent fuse failure usually indicates a short circuit or an
overload in the electrical system. If a fuse burns out
frequently, take the machine to an authorized Astec
service dealer for repair.
SPARK PLUG SERVICE
Recommended spark plugs: ZGR5A (NGK)
J16CR-U (DENSO)
NOTE:
Incorrect spark plugs can cause engine damage.
1. Disconnect the spark plug caps, and remove any dirt
from around the spark plug area.
2. Remove the spark plugs with a 13/16 inch spark plug
wrench.

3. Inspect the spark plugs. Replace them if the
electrodes are worn, or if the insulator is cracked or
chipped. Clean the spark plugs with a wire brush if
you are going to reuse them.
4. Measure the spark plug electrode gap with a suitable
gauge. The gap should be 0.028 - 0.031 inch (0.70 -
0.80 mm). Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefully
bending the side electrode.

5. Install the spark plug carefully, by hand, to avoid
cross-threading.
6. After the spark plug seats, tighten with a 13/16 inch
spark plug wrench to compress the washer. If
reinstalling used spark plugs, tighten 1/8 - 1/4 turn
after the spark plug seats. If installing new spark
plugs, tighten 1/2 turn after the spark plug seats.
7. Attach the spark plug caps.
NOTE:
A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the
engine. Overtightening the spark plug can damage the
threads in the cylinder head.
VALVE ADJUSTMENT
Intake Valve Clearance (cold):................ 0.15 ±0.02 mm
Exhaust Valve Clearance (cold):.............. 0.20 ±0.02 mm
SPARK ARRESTER SERVICE
The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to
keep it functioning as designed.
If the engine has been running, the muffler will be very
hot. Allow the muffler to cool before servicing the spark
arrester.
1. Remove the special screw from the muffler and
remove the spark arrester.
