Disk Files
The Atar i 810 stor es data in files. A disk fil e ca n co ntain eit h er a
BASIC program , a mac hin e language pro gram , or da ta . An Atari
diskett e can contain as many as 64 fil es.
Files
are ass i gned uniqu e filenames of up to eig ht characters. The
first charac
ter of a filename mu st be a capita l le tt er. Subsequent
filename c har acters ca n eit her be cap it al l ette rs or numb ers.
Blank spaces, punctuation mark s, and s pecial c haract e rs (# , $ ,@ )
are not all owed in filenames.
Fil en am es can al so con ta in a filename extension of thr ee or
few er characte rs. Th e fil e nam e and filename extens ion mu st be
separated
with a pe riod. Fil ename extensi o ns ca n conta in e ith er
le tter s or numbers.
Filename extensions are o ft en us ed to in dicate the typ e of file.

are listed in Table 7- 1.
Filename Match Characters
Atari DOS all ows the u se of the fi lena me match characte rs,? a nd
*. Th ese character s ca n be u se d to sta nd for any single characte r
(?) or group of ch aracte rs (*). For exa mpl e, FILE?.DAT wou ld
mat ch the following filenam es .
FILE1.DAT
FILEZ.DAT
FILE?DAT wou ld n ot mat ch th e following filenames:

FIL E1 . BAS
FILE. * would match any of the fo ll owi ng filenames.
