Open the cove r @ on the positiv e terminal.

Connect the charger connectors according to
the instructions to the
ju mp start bolts.
(Bolts under the cove r= "positive", Bolts
with hex head= "negative").

Only now plug the mains lead for the charg -
ing equipment into the wall outlet and turn
iton ¢ ,& .

Make sure the charging rate is not over
30 arnps/ 14 .8 Volt .

When the battery is fully charged: Turn the
charging equipment off and remove the
mains lead from the wall outlet.

Now remove the clamps for the charging
equipment.

Close the cover @ on the posi t ive term inal
and re-install the cover @ .

Close the hood ¢ page 232.
A discharged battery can freeze at tempera-
tures of only 32 °F (0 °C). Allow a frozen bat-
tery to thaw completely before attempt ing to
charge it ¢ ,&.. Howeve r, we recommend not
usi ng a thawed battery again because the bat-
tery ca sing can be cracked d ue to ice forma-
tion and can lea k bat t ery acid.
Battery charg ing (Maximum charging rate
of
30 amp s/ 14.8 Volt)
When cha rging at Low voltages (e.g. with a
trickle charger), the battery cables do not
have to be disconnected first. The batte ry
caps should
not be opened when charging a
battery.
It is not necessary to remove t he ba ttery from
the luggage compartment .
Fast charging the battery (charging rate
above 14.8 Volts)
For technica l reasons d o no t use a battery
charger t hat uses voltage greater t han 14.8
Volts to charge your vehicle's batte ry.

Charg ing a battery can be dangerous.
- Always fo llow the operating instructions
provided by the battery charge r manu-
fact urer when charging your battery.

- Never charge a frozen battery. It may ex-
plode because of gas trapped in the ice .
Allow a frozen battery to thaw out first.
- Do not reuse batteries wh ich were fro-
zen. The battery housing may have
cracked and weakened when the battery
froze.
- Charge the battery in a well ventilated
area. Keep away from open flame or elec-
trical spark. Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas
generated by the battery is explos ive.
- To reduce the danger of explosion, never
connect or d isconnect charger cab les
while the charger is ope rat ing.
- Fast cha rging a batte ry is dangerous and
should only be attempted by a compe-
tent techn ician with the prope r equip-
men t .
- Battery acid that may spi ll dur ing cha rg-
ing should be washed off wit h a solu ti o n
of wa rm wat e r and baking soda to neu-
trali ze the ac id.
(D Note
Neve r use a fast cha rger as a booster to
star t the engi ne. This w ill ser iously dam-
age sen sit ive e lectronic componen t s, such
as cont rol units, re lays, radio, etc., as well
as the batte ry charger.
Battery replacement
The new battery must have the same specifi-
cations and dimensions as the original equip-
ment battery.

cle is responsible for distributing the elect ri-
cal energy throughout your vehicle

page 203 . The intelligent energy manage-
ment system will keep the engine battery
charged better then vehicles without this sys-
tem . To make sure the addi t ional electrical en-
ergy is ava ilab le once again afte r you have
changed the batte ry, we recommend that you
install batteries of the same type and manu-
factu re on ly (the same as t hose installed at
the time your vehicle was delive red).
