Ignition lock and ignition switch
Ignition lock
The igniti on key starts or st ops the eng ine.

In position => fig. 65 (D both the ignition and engine are off, and the
steer ing is locked .
To
lock the steering after you have removed the igni tion key, t urn
the steering whee l in either direction until you hear it lock into
place. You should always lock the stee ring wheneve r you leave your
vehic le. This makes vehicle theft even more difficu lt=> & .
Ignition on @
After switching the ignition on , the needles move all the way up and
then down .
If it is difficult to turn the key after you have inserted it into the igni -
tion lock, turn the steering whee l back and forth . This will take the
load off the steering lock mecha nism and you wil l be able to t urn the
key free ly and start the engine.
Starting the eng ine @
In this position the engine starts . Whi le the engine is starting, the
power supply to the headlights and ot her electrical consumers is
temporarily interrupted to conserve battery power . After the engine
has started, release the key and it wil l return to position @ .
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be turned
back to position
(D. The non-repeat lock prevents you from
damaging the star ter when the engine is runn ing.
& WARNING
Never remove the key from the ignition lock w hile the vehicle is
moving. The steering wheel will lock causing loss of control.
If you have to leave your vehicle - even for just a minute - always
remove the ignit ion key and take it with you. This is especially
important if you are going to leave children behind in the vehicle.
The children could start the engine or use other vehicle control s.
Unsupe rvised use of vehicle controls (for example , power
windows) can cause serious personal injuries .
[ i ] Tips
If the vehicle battery has been disconnected and then reconnected,
then you must leave the key in position @ for about 5 seconds
before you can start the engine.
Starting the engine
The engine can only be st art ed with your origin al A udi
key.
On vehicles w ith R t ronic, the engine can be started in t he
neut ral posi tion N and in each gea r (1 - 6 and R).
- Set t he park in g brake=> & .
- On vehicles w ith manual t ran sm ission, full y d epress t he
clutc h pe dal.
- Press and ho ld t he b rake pedal.
