do not dep ress t he gas pedal w hen sta rting t he eng ine .
- Let go of t he key as soon as the engine sta rts - t he st arter
must not contin ue to ru n. On vehicles with R tro ni c,
select gea r pos ition N.
A cold eng ine may at first be loud after it has been started . This is
due to the hydraulic valves building up the oi l pressur e. This is
normal and no need for concer n.
If the engine does not start immediat ely, stop trying after 10
seconds and then try to restart the engine abou t
30 seconds later .
& WARNING
• Never start or let the engine run in a confined or enclosed area.
Exhaust fumes from the engine contain carbon monoxide, a color-
less and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled .
• Never leave the engine idling unattended . An unattended
vehicle with a running engine poses a danger of personal injury or
theft .
• With the engine running and a gear engaged , you have to hold
the vehicle w ith the foot brake.
0 Note
• Avoid high engine speeds, fast acceleration or heavy engine
loads w hile t he eng ine is sti ll cold . This cou ld da mage the engi ne.
• The engine cannot be started by pushing or towing the vehic le.
<i' For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emis -
sions, do not let your vehic le stand and war m up. Be ready to drive
off immediate ly after starting your vehic le. •

Stopping the engine
On vehic les wi t h R t roni c, the engine can be t urned off in the
neut ral posit ion N an d in each gea r (1 - 6 and R).
- Turn the ignition key to position
G) =:> page 82, fig. 65.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotroni c only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off, you have to apply more
force when steering or braking . Since you cannot steer and stop
normall y, this can lead to accidents and serious injurie s.
0 Note
• If t he eng ine has bee n under heavy load for an extended per iod
of time , heat bui lds up in the engine compartment after the engine
is switched off - there is a risk of damaging the engine. Allow the
engine to continue to run at idle for a short time or drive until it has
coo led down before you turn it off =>
page 172.
• If the engine has been under heavy load for an extended period
of time, it can become extremely hot . You shou ld not park your
vehicle over easily combustib le objects or areas (e.g. grass or
leaves). There is a risk of starting a fire.
[ i ] Tips
After the engine has been switched off, the radiator fan can
co nt inue to run for up to 10 minutes - even with t he ignition
switched off . It can also switch on again after some time if the
coo lant temperature rises as the result of heat bu ildup or if the
engine compartment is heated by the sun's rays and the engine is
hot. •
