""Switch the ignition off.
"" Place a rag or cloth on the cap of the coolant
expansion tank and turn the cap

~
.&_.
""Read the coolant level inside the coolant ex-
pansion tank¢ fig. 120 . With a cold engine,
it must be above the "min" mark. With a hot
engine, it can be a little above the indicated
range.
The location of the coolant expansion tank
can be seen in the engine compartment illus-
tration
¢ page 164.
To obtain an accurate reading, the engine
must be switched off.
The expans ion tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, t he warning
light in the Auto-Check System
¢ page 15 will
illuminate until you add coolant and the level
has been restored to normal. Even though
there is an electric coolant level sensor, we
still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time .
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a le ak in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cool-
ing system should be inspected immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer . It is not
enough mere ly to add coolant .
In a se aled system, losses can occur only if
the boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as
a resu lt of overheating.
A WARNING
'-
- The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not open the cap of the coolant expan-
sion tank when the engine is hot. You
risk being scalded.
- The coolant additive, and therefore the
coolant itself, is hazardous to hea lth .
Keep the coolant add it ive in the original
container out of the reach of children . It
is a poison hazard .
(D Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak seal-
ant to your vehicle's engine coolant . Add-
ing radiator repa ir fluid may adversely af-
fect the funct ion and performance of your
cooling system and could result in damage
not covered by your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty.
Adding coolant
Before you check anything in the eng ine com-
partment,
always read and heed all WARN-
INGS ¢ .&. in Working in the engine compart-
ment on page 162 .
""Add coolant .
""Twist the cap on again
tightly.
Replacement engine coolant must conform to
exact specificat ions ¢
page 171, Coolant.
We recommend using only coolant add it ive
Gl2++, Gl3 or in an emergency G12+. Do not
use a different additive . In an emergency use
plain water until you can get the correct addi-
t ive and can restore the correct ratio. This
shou ld be done as soon as possib le.
If you have lost a considerab le amount of
coolant, then you sho uld add cold ant ifreeze
and cold water only when the engine is cold.
