Do you have a question about the Benchmark 1268-600 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Benchmark Variable Speed Jigsaw, model 1268-600, is a versatile power tool designed for cutting various materials with precision and control. It features a robust 6 Amp motor and offers a variable speed range of 800 to 3,000 strokes per minute (SPM) with no load, allowing users to adjust the cutting speed to suit different materials and applications. The stroke length is 3/4 inch (20mm), providing efficient material removal.

Key Technical Specifications:

  • Rating: 120V, 60Hz, AC
  • Amperes: 6 A
  • Variable Speed: 800–3,000 SPM (no load)
  • Stroke Length: 3/4 in. (20mm)
  • Blade Change System: Tool-free
  • Blade Types: "T" and "U" shanks
  • Cutting Depth @ 90°: Wood: 2-1/2" (65mm), Metal: 5/16" (8mm)
  • Orbital Settings: 4 plus neutral
  • Base Plate Bevel: 0–45°
  • Weight: 4.4lb (2kg)

Usage Features:

The jigsaw is equipped with several features to enhance usability and safety. It has a tool-free blade change system, making it quick and easy to swap between "T" and "U" shank blades. The base plate can be beveled from 0° to 45° left or right, allowing for angled cuts. A bevel angle quick release lever facilitates easy adjustment and locking of the sole plate.

For improved cutting performance and blade life, the tool offers four orbital cutting settings (plus neutral). These settings adjust the blade angle, making it suitable for different materials:

  • Position 0 (Neutral): Metal
  • Position 1 (Small): Hard wood
  • Position 2 (Large): Soft wood
  • Position 3 (Full): Styrofoam

The jigsaw includes a laser/LED work-light switch, a 4-position switch that controls both the laser guide and the LED work-light. The laser projects a marker beam onto the workpiece, aiding in guiding the saw along the desired cutting pattern, while the LED light illuminates the work area. Users can cycle through different combinations of laser and LED light (ON/OFF) by pressing the switch. A variable speed control wheel allows for precise speed adjustments, with settings from "1" (slowest) to "6" (highest).

The trigger switch activates the jigsaw, and a lock-on button is provided for continuous operation during extended cutting tasks. For dust management, the tool can be connected to a workshop vacuum using the supplied vacuum adapter. A vacuum port switch directs sawdust either away from the cutting mark (when no vacuum is attached) or into the vacuum system. An edge guide is also included to assist in cutting narrow edges from workpieces, adjustable with two mounting screws.

Safety Features:

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions:

  • Eye Protection: Always wear safety goggles that comply with ANSI Z87.1 or CSA Z94.3 to protect against flying debris.
  • Hearing Protection: Use hearing protection, especially during extended or noisy operations.
  • Dust Mask: Wear a dust mask designed for dusty environments, particularly when cutting materials that produce fine particles, to prevent exposure to chemicals known to cause health issues.
  • Circuit Protection: Use proper circuit protection (120 Volts AC, 15 Amps circuit with a time-delayed fuse or circuit breaker) to avoid electrical hazards.
  • Extension Cord Safety: Use an appropriate gauge extension cord, especially for outdoor use, and ensure it is in good condition.
  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of bystanders.
  • Personal Safety: Stay alert, avoid operating the tool while fatigued or under the influence, and dress appropriately (no loose clothing or jewelry).
  • Blade Handling: Always remove the plug from the power source before changing blades or making adjustments. Ensure blades are securely held and never touch them immediately after use as they will be hot. Use only "U" or "T" shank blades designed for jigsaw use and avoid dull or damaged blades.
  • Plunge Cutting: Exercise extreme caution during plunge cuts, preferably drilling a pilot hole first, and use blades with 7 teeth per inch for this operation.

Maintenance Features:

Maintenance primarily involves keeping the tool clean and ensuring its parts are in good working order.

  • Cleaning: Remove accumulated dust and debris regularly with a soft, dry brush. Avoid using solvents on plastic parts, as they can cause damage. Do not allow brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or penetrating oils to contact plastic parts.
  • Fiberglass/Drywall Use: If used on abrasive materials like fiberglass, drywall, or plaster, clean the tool frequently by blowing it out with an air jet to prevent accelerated wear on internal components.
  • Lubrication: The bearings are pre-lubricated for the life of the unit under normal conditions, so no further lubrication is required.
  • Parts Replacement: When servicing, use only identical original equipment replacement parts to maintain safety and prevent product damage. Any electrical repairs should be performed by a qualified technician.

The Benchmark Variable Speed Jigsaw is backed by a 5-year limited warranty against defects in material or workmanship, with a 3-year warranty for the battery and charger (if applicable). The warranty does not cover expendable parts or damage due to abuse, misuse, or careless handling, and does not apply to commercial or rental use.
