Troubleshooting
While normal care and regular maintenance will extend the life of your unit, prolonged or constant use may eventually require
that service be performed to allow it to continue to operate properly.
This troubleshooting guide lists the most common problems, their causes, and remedies.
Refer to Maintenance Procedures for instructions on how to perform most of these minor adjustments and service repairs. All
procedures can be performed at a local authorized service dealer.
Problem Possible Cause Possible Solution
Abnormal vibration. Loose or off-balance impeller.
Loose engine.
Check impeller and replace if necessary.
Check the engine hardware and tighten if
necessary.
Will not vacuum or has poor vacuuming
performance.
Dirty or clogged debris bag.
Hose kit cap is missing.
Clogged nozzle or exhaust.
Improper nozzle height for debris.
Clean the debris bag.
Check and clear any clogs in the exhaust, bag, or
nozzle.
Adjust the nozzle height so that it is close to, but
not buried in, debris.
Vacuuming experience is dusty. Debris is excessively brittle and dry. Switch to felt bag for dusty conditions.
Engine will not start. Throttle control is in the OFF position.
Choke was not engaged under cold conditions.
Engine is out of gasoline or gasoline is bad/old.
Spark plug wire is disconnected.
Dirty air filter.
Check the throttle and choke positions.
Check the gasoline and refuel if necessary.
Connect the spark plug wire.
Clean or replace the air filter.
Engine is locked and will not turn over. Debris lodged in the impeller.
Other engine issue.
Safely dislodge the debris clogging the impeller.
Wear heavy duty gloves. See the Clearing a
Clogged Chipper section for more information.
Contact an authorized service dealer.
Self-propelled drive does not function. Drive bail not engaged.
Drive belt is damaged or worn.
Drive clutch cable is kinked or out of adjustment.
Drive chain is off sprocket.
Engage the drive bail.
Check the drive belt condition and replace if
necessary.
Check the drive clutch cable and adjust if
necessary.
Check the drive chain. Adjust or see an authorized
service dealer.
Self-propelled drive does not release. Improper drive clutch cable adjustment.
Drive clutch cable is kinked.
Check and adjust the drive clutch cable.
Self-propelled drive is noisy and clunky. Chain is dry.
Chain is misaligned.
Lubricate the chain and check alignment. Adjust if
necessary.
