the brochure "Looking after your car".
Your service provider
Many telephone functions depend on the
service provider and the individual contract
for your SIM card. For this reason, it is
possible that certain functions of the BMW
car phone that are described in these oper-
ating instructions may not be available for
your SIM card. The functions in question
are identified with the symbol in this
Owner's Handbook.
Please see also the information sheets
published by GSM (Global System for
Mobile Communication) network opera-
tors, together with the information from
your service provider.
Depending on your location, you may also
be using the transmitters of a network
operator with which your service provider
has an agreement for handling your calls.
Basic terms
GSM networks
Your BMW car phone operates according
to the international GSM (Global System for
Mobile Communication) standard. This
standard allows you to use your telephone
in different countries.
There are various networks worldwide
whose operators provide the necessary
infrastructure for mobile telephony. It is
possible that telephone reception may be
poor or unavailable in remote regions. This
will usually be due to the inadequate power
of the transmitter and therefore to incom-
plete coverage. It may be possible to over-
come this problem by logging onto a
different network.
Service providers
Service providers hire capacity from
network operators and offer a variety of
services, such as mailbox functions.
A separate charge is made for some of
these services, as agreed in the contract
that exists between you and the service
provider. Your telephone is enabled by a
card which informs your telephone what
services are included in your contract.
Many of the telephone's functions depend
on the service provider and the terms of
your individual contract. For this reason, it
is possible that certain functions of the
BMW car phone that are described in these
operating instructions may not be available
for your telephone card.
Functions that not every service
provider includes in its basic package
of services are marked with in these
operating instructions.
