Malfunction Possible cause Solution
Noisy ELSD baseline Dirty or contaminated gas u Replace gas source.
u Replace filter.
Gas is not dry/high humidity
environment
u Use a dry air supply.
u Use nitrogen.
Moisture trapped in the gas
lines
u Remove moisture from lines
by purging the air flow
system with nitrogen for 5
minutes.
Mobile phase is contaminated
or contains non-volatile modi-
fiers
u Use volatile modifiers in the
mobile phase.
Solvent contains non volatile
stabilizers
u Use solvent with volatile
modifiers.
Dirty optics u Clean the optics.
Dirty drift tube u Clean drift tube.
Not correct installed exhaust u Install the exhaust correctly.

Electronics - Preamp not
grounded properly
u Verify that preamp
grounding cable is in place.
Nebulizer is partially blocked u Sonicate nebulizer to clean
or replace.
Silica or packing material
leaked out of cartridge
u Replace the cartridge.
u Flush the system.
No UV signal UV light burned out u Replace the UV light.
Low UV signal Dirty flow cell u Clean the flow cell.
