Part Maintenance 7-19
Appearance Inspection
1. Terminals
2. Clamps
Check whether the battery connection
is corroded, loose or cracked, and
whether the clamp is loose.
a. If the battery is corroded, wash it
with a solution of warm water and
baking soda. Coat the outside of
the terminal with grease to prevent
further corrosion.
b. If a terminal is loose, tighten the
clamp nut – but do not overtighten.
c. Tighten the battery clamp to the
extent that the battery can be
firmly held in place. Overtightening
may damage the battery case.
NOTICE
y Before performing maintenance,
be sure to turn off the engine
and all electric accessories.
y When checking the battery, the
first step is to remove the
grounding cable from the
negative (-) terminal and the last
step is to reinstall it in place.
y Be careful not to cause a short
circuit with tools.
y Don’t get any liquid into the
battery when washing it.
Checking Battery Electrolyte
Checking by Indicators
You can determine the battery
conditions by the battery status
indicator. See the text on the battery
case for the meaning of indicator
statuses.
CAUTION
y Replace the battery if the
electrolyte is insufficient. Don’t
add electrolyte by yourself.
