Overview

The Cardinal 758 and 758S are weight indicating instruments designed for commercial and non-commercial weighing applications. Manufactured by Cardinal Scale Manufacturing Co. in Webb City, Missouri, these instruments are built for quality and reliability, offering a range of features for accurate weight measurement and data management.

Function Description:

The Cardinal 758/758S functions as a weight indicator, displaying weight data from connected load cells. It can be used as a standalone unit or integrated into a larger system for data recording and transmission. Key functionalities include:

  • Weight Measurement: Displays weight in various units (pounds, kilograms, ounces, grams).
  • Data Output: Transmits weight data via an RS-232 serial port to printers, remote displays (like the SB-80), or computers. Data can be sent on demand (by pressing the PRINT key or receiving a computer command) or continuously.
  • Calibration and Setup: Allows for comprehensive configuration of scale parameters, including scale interval, decimal point location, capacity, weighing units, zero tracking range, digital filtering, motion range, sample rate, power-up zero, automatic shutoff, sleep mode, and baud rate.
  • Diagnostic Features: Includes a diagnostic software program that tests circuitry and verifies proper operation, displaying error and status messages when problems are detected.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Requirements: 115 VAC 50/60Hz (optional 230 VAC 50/60 Hz) via a 12 VDC 300 mA wall plug-in UL/CSA listed power supply, or six (6) C cell Alkaline, Ni-Cad, or NiMH batteries (not included).
  • Enclosure Size: 7 7/8" W x 4" H x 3" D (194 x 102 x 76mm).
  • Operating Temperature: 14°F (-10°C) to 104°F (+40°C).
  • Display: Five-digit, seven-segment 0.7" high LCD.
  • Sensitivity: 0.8 uV/division (0-3.3 mV/V), Class III.
  • Signal Input Range: 0.2mV to 17mV max.
  • Transducer Excitation: 5.2 VDC.
  • Number of Load Cells: Up to 4 each 350Ω.
  • Load Cell Cable Length: 150' max.; 30' max without sense lines.
  • Resolution: 5,000 divisions commercial, up to 10,000 divisions non-commercial.
  • Capacities: 1,000 to 5,000 divisions commercial, up to 10,000 divisions non-commercial.
  • Division Value: 1, 2, or 5 x 1, 0.1, 0.01, 0.001.
  • Sample Rate: 1 to 8 samples per second selectable.
  • Auto Zero Range: 0.5 or 1 through 9 divisions.
  • Weighing Units: Pounds, kilograms, ounces, or grams.
  • Keyboard: Membrane type with 4 keys.
  • Serial Interface: RS-232 I/O with selectable baud rates (1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19.2K baud). Data format is fixed at 8 bits, No parity, 1 stop bit.
  • NEMA 4X Enclosure (758S): Provides protection against harsh environments, suitable for horizontal or vertical surface mounting.

Usage Features:

  • Mounting Flexibility: The 758 can be mounted on a desktop, column, or wall using its mounting bracket. The 758S, with its NEMA 4X enclosure, can also be mounted on horizontal or vertical surfaces using a gimbal stand.
  • Battery Operation: Supports six "C" size Alkaline, Ni-Cad, or NiMH batteries for portable use. Important: Do not mix battery types, and do not connect the plug-in power supply when batteries are installed, as the device lacks a charging circuit. Ni-Cad or NiMH batteries must be externally charged.
  • User-Friendly Keypad: Features four membrane keys (CAPACITY, ON/OFF, ZERO, UNITS, PRINT) for easy operation and setup.
  • Annunciators: Visual indicators (STABLE, lb, kg, oz, g, ZERO) provide clear status feedback on the display mode, stability, and active weighing units.
  • Configurable Serial Output: Allows users to choose between printer output (gross weight only, on demand), weight-on-demand (computer-triggered), or continuous output (for remote displays). Users can also configure carriage return/line feed options and end-of-print line feeds.
  • Automatic Shutoff and Sleep Mode: Features to conserve battery life by automatically turning off or entering a low-power "SLEEP" mode after a period of inactivity. These settings are configurable.
  • Digital Filtering: Selectable filter levels (No Filtering, Minimal, Moderate, Custom) to stabilize weight readings in varying environmental conditions.
  • Zero Tracking Range: Configurable range for automatic zeroing, with an optional 4% limit of scale capacity.
  • Setup Review Mode: Allows for quick review and modification of operational parameters (Power Up Zero, Automatic Shutoff Time, Sleep Mode Time, Baud Rate, Printer Continuous Output, Carriage Return/Line Feed Selection, End-Of-Print Line Feeds) without entering full calibration mode.

Maintenance Features:

  • Calibration Jumper (J1): A removable jumper on the circuit board (or a push-button switch in the NEMA 4X enclosure) provides access to the setup and calibration mode, preventing unauthorized changes.
  • Calibration Seal: Designed to accept a lead and wire security seal for commercial applications, ensuring that calibration adjustments are protected from tampering, as required by local weights and measurement officials.
  • Error and Status Displays: The instrument provides clear error messages (UNS, -OF-, O Cap, CALIB, a fal, Help a, trl, lo Bat) to assist in troubleshooting and identifying operational issues.
  • Care and Cleaning Guidelines: Specific instructions are provided to ensure longevity, including warnings against submerging in water, using harsh solvents, exposing to temperature extremes, and recommendations for gentle cleaning with a damp soft cloth and mild detergent.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A "Before You Call For Service" section outlines common problems (display not turning on, incorrect weight, no weight display) and suggests remedies, such as checking batteries, power supply, load cell connections, and calibration status.
  • Load Cell Connection: Uses a 9-pin "D" connector. Jumpers J2 and J3 on the PCB must be properly configured for 4-wire or 6-wire load cells (with sense leads).
  • NEMA 4X Enclosure (758S): Designed for durability in challenging environments, with gland connectors for secure cable entry and a robust construction. The enclosure's rear panel is removable for internal access.
