34 SAFETY FIRST Edition 1 – December 2019
MSA G1 Electronic Breathing Apparatus
Modes of operation
The MSA G1 E set can operate in a three different modes:
no power mode;
sleep mode; and
active mode.
No power mode
The MSA G1 E set will still operate, with limited functionality, without a battery or power.
The breathing mechanism will still operate, the pneumatic pressure gauge will still
register operator pressure (without a backlight) and the mechanical low pressure
warning whistle (when pressure falls below 55 ± 5 bar) will operate as usual (Refer to
the topic on the mechanical low pressure whistle for more information). The facemask
speech diaphragm and open port design will still allow restricted speech when
wearing
the facemask (as the power-assisted microphone will not be working).
Should an operator experience a catastrophic electronic failure (hardware or battery
failure) while using the BA operationally, it will go into
no power mode
and continue to
operate as described above, allowing the operator to exit the
fireground.
If an operator’s BA catastrophically fails, they must exit
the fireground
immediately.
The operator should remember they no longer have motion alarm or manual distress
alarm capability when in
no power mode
.
