Chapter 3
Operation
This chapter covers:
expectations;
PACT check;
functional pre-operational check;
visual inspection;
changing the cylinder;
functional test;
cold weather operations; and
record keeping.
Expectations
Proper operation of BA is fundamental in ensuring the safety of firefighters. Firefighters,
and those managing the incident, consider many factors on the fireground when
carrying out their fundamental duties. It is important that each member of the team is
aware of their responsibilities as their action or inaction can have a huge effect on the
safety and wellbeing of themselves and their crew.
PACT Check
The simple team checklist mnemonic of PACT assists firefighters to practice, support
and promote safe firefighting behaviour immediately prior to entering a hazardous
environment when wearing BA.
Firefighters may make decisions and take actions in the initial stages of a fast-paced,
dynamic and volatile incident based on a perceived lack of time and where the
consequences for making mistakes are significant.
