Overview

This document is the User's Manual for the Chroma Programmable AC Source models 6460, 6463, and 6490, version 1.6, published in October 2015.

The Chroma Programmable AC Source is a high-efficiency, programmable AC power source designed for simulating a wide variety of AC line conditions and accurate measurement of power. It utilizes a microprocessor-controlled waveform oscillator to generate accurate, stable output voltage and frequency. The PWM design of the power stage allows for full volt-ampere into loads. The front panel features both an RPG (rotary pulse generator) and keypad controls for setting the output voltage and frequency. The LCD provides a complete operational status of the unit to the user. Remote programming is accomplished either through the GPIB bus or the RS-232C serial port.

Key Features:

  • Configuration:
    • Local operation via keypad on the front panel.
    • Remote operation via GPIB or RS-232C interface.

Usage Features:

The AC source features a user-friendly programming interface via the front panel keypad and LCD.

  • Data Entry: Parameters can be set in normal mode using numeric keys and ENTER, or in editing mode for single-digit changes or step changes using cursor keys and the RPG.
  • Output Setting: The main operational menu allows setting AC output parameters like voltage, frequency, and sync source. The output can be activated (RUN) or paused (PAUSE).
  • Output Relay: The output relay can be set to "ON" (closed) or "OFF" (open). When "OFF", the relay closes only when the output status is "RUN".
  • 3-Phase Unbalanced Voltage Programming: For 3-phase models (6463 and 6490), individual phase voltages (Ø1, Ø2, Ø3) can be programmed.
  • Configuration Settings: Includes External Reference, Remote Sense, GPIB Address, and RS-232C parameters.
    • External Reference: Allows controlling output voltage amplitude from external DC signals (0-10V), with Vout = Vcontrol / 10V * V_range.
    • Remote Sense: Compensates for voltage drop across connecting cables by sensing voltage directly at the load terminals.
    • GPIB Address: Programmable from 0 to 30.
    • RS-232C: Baud rate (2400/4800/9600/19200) and parity (EVEN/ODD/NONE) are configurable.
  • Saving and Recalling: System data can be saved into three memory groups (0, 1, 2). Group 0 stores power-on defaults and is recalled automatically on power-up.
  • Output Range: Selectable between 150V and 300V.
  • Data Lock: Prevents unauthorized modification of pre-defined parameters.
  • Buzzer: Can be turned ON or OFF for keypad presses and RPG turns.
  • Protection Settings: User-programmable limits for output RMS current (0-100A), output voltage (0-300V), and delay time (0-100s) for overload protection.
  • Measurement Functions: The AC source can measure V, P, I, CF, PF, F, and Ptot without external instruments. Up to 7 readings can be displayed concurrently.

Maintenance Features:

  • Self-Test: Performs a series of self-tests on power-on, checking ROM, RAM, Waveform, Frequency, and Status Check. "OK" indicates no problem, "NG" indicates a failure, accompanied by a "beep" sound. Error messages provide guidance for troubleshooting.
  • Protection System: Includes both software and hardware protection mechanisms.
    • Software Protection: Current, Power, Voltage Limit, Voltage Range, Error.
    • Hardware Protection: PFO (Power Failure), FAN (Fan Failure), OPP (Over Power), OCP (Over Current), SHT (Short), INP (Input Power Failure), OTP (Over Temperature), OPEN (Feedback Open), S.OCP (Software Over Current), S.OPP (Software Over Power), NP (Negative Power), dV (Voltage Difference).
  • Resetting Protection: If an output protection is triggered, the user must remove the errors and press ENTER for two seconds to unlock the output protection and resume normal operation.
  • Cooling Fan: Speed automatically adjusts with temperature changes.
  • Safety Cover: Protects the user from electrical shock.
  • Service and Repair: Operating personnel should not remove the instrument cover. Component replacement and internal adjustment should only be performed by qualified service personnel.
  • Disposal: Electrical appliances should not be disposed of as unsorted municipal waste. Separate collection facilities should be used, and local government contacted for information. Retailers are legally obligated to take back old appliances for disposal free of charge when replacing with a new one.
