Overview

The Clarion APA4203 and APA4162 are 4-channel car audio amplifiers designed to enhance your in-car audio experience. These amplifiers offer a versatile solution for creating various multi-channel sound systems, allowing for configurations as a 2-, 3-, or 4-channel amplifier with a simple switch. They can also be set up for mixed-mode operation to power satellite speakers and a subwoofer, providing flexibility for different audio setups.

A key feature of these amplifiers is their built-in 12 dB-per-octave electronic crossovers. Unlike amplifiers that might offer a single filter, the APA4203 and APA4162 come with two independent filters, one for the front channels (CH1/2) and one for the rear channels (CH3/4). These filters are fully adjustable, allowing you to set crossover frequencies between 50 and 200 Hz for either high-pass (HP) or low-pass (LP) filtering. This precision helps in tailoring the sound for both front and rear channels, ensuring accurate frequency attenuation with minimal phase distortion. This feature helps in tuning the low-frequency audio response to produce rich, full bass tones, which are often challenging to achieve in a car audio environment. However, it's important to use this feature carefully; if you hear a "pop" from the speakers, lower the BASS EXTENDER gain to prevent damage. Similarly, if the audio sounds muddy or distorted due to amplifier clipping, reduce the BASS EXTENDER to avoid overheating and potential shutdown.

The amplifiers are built with a regulated MOSFET power supply, which ensures superior control of output wattage regardless of input voltage or the dynamic demands of music. MOSFETs are chosen for their inherent characteristics that provide superior accuracy, stability, and control. A toroid-coil transformer is used for maximum power transfer with minimal heat loss. The circuit design also pays careful attention to keeping AM RFI (radio frequency interference) at low levels, preventing unwanted noise.

For system expansion, the APA4203 model includes stereo (gold-plated RCA) NON-FADE LINE OUT jacks (CH1/3 and CH2/4). These outputs send summed L/R preamplified signals to additional amplifiers, enabling more complex multi-amplifier setups.

Speaker connections are made via gold-plated terminals, clearly labeled as FRONT CH1 (left), CH2 (right), and REAR CH3 (left), CH4 (right). Automotive-type 25 A fuses are externally mounted for easy replacement and protect the front and rear amplifier circuits.

Before drilling, verify that proposed mounting holes will not interfere with fuel lines, brake lines, or electrical wiring.

Wiring precautions emphasize clean and secure connections, insulated with electrical tape or shrink tubing. A secure, clean ground connection, using the shortest possible wire, is critical to minimize resistance and avoid noise. The amplifier's positive power lead should be connected via an external fuse directly to the battery's positive terminal, not the car's fuse panel. The appropriate wire gauge should be determined using a power cable calculator to ensure minimal voltage drop. When replacing fuses, always use the same current rating to maintain protection. Speakers should never be grounded to the vehicle chassis.

To avoid noise problems, it's recommended to run the amplifier's positive power lead along one side of the vehicle, remote turn-on wire and RCA audio cables down the center, and speaker wires along the remaining side. If wires must cross, they should do so perpendicularly. Grommets should be used when creating passage holes for power wires to prevent nicks and short circuits. High-quality RCA cables, no longer than necessary, should be used to minimize signal loss and noise.
