INSTALLATION MANUAL
FOR
VANGUARD 245 CHILLER
The Vanguard 245 Chiller is for chilling incoming water before it enters the beverage system. It is for use in high
ambient water conditions and high volume beverage locations where additional cooling is required. Pre-chilling
of the water improves the output of the beverage dispensing units.
The unit can sit on the floor or be mounted on the wall with the brackets as shown below. When mounting the
unit on the wall make sure air intake side is not facing the wall. The air exits the top. Make sure nothing is cov-
ering the top to ensure proper operation.
The separate 3-way water manifold should be attached to the 3 water inlets. Inlets 1 and 2 are for water to the
two carbonators on the back room panel or B-I-B stand, which has shut off valves on the panel. Inlet number 3
with a shut off valve and outlet number 3 is a separate circuit to supply chilled water to the ice machine (see
diagram).
The Vanguard 245 Chiller uses mechanical refrigeration in a water bath to chill the coils that the water passes
through.

Overview

The Vanguard 245 Chiller is a specialized refrigeration unit designed to pre-chill incoming water before it enters a beverage dispensing system. Its primary function is to enhance the performance of beverage dispensing units, particularly in environments characterized by high ambient water temperatures and locations with high-volume beverage demand. By pre-cooling the water, the chiller ensures that the beverage dispensing units operate more efficiently and consistently, improving the quality and output of dispensed beverages.

This chiller is engineered to address the common challenge of warm incoming water, which can negatively impact the cooling capacity and efficiency of standard beverage dispensers. By providing a dedicated pre-chilling stage, the Vanguard 245 reduces the thermal load on the dispensing units, allowing them to maintain optimal operating temperatures more easily. This results in colder, more refreshing beverages and can extend the lifespan of the dispensing equipment by reducing strain on their internal cooling components.

The operational principle of the Vanguard 245 Chiller involves mechanical refrigeration within a water bath. This design allows the unit to effectively chill coils through which the incoming water passes. The water bath acts as a thermal reservoir, providing a stable and efficient medium for heat transfer, ensuring consistent and effective cooling of the water. This method is robust and reliable, capable of handling continuous operation in demanding commercial settings.

In terms of installation and usage, the Vanguard 245 Chiller offers flexibility. It can be positioned on the floor or mounted on a wall using specific brackets. When wall-mounting, it is crucial to ensure that the air intake side of the unit does not face the wall, as this would impede proper airflow. The unit is designed to exhaust air from the top, so it is equally important to ensure that nothing obstructs the top surface to guarantee adequate ventilation and prevent overheating. Proper airflow is vital for the chiller's efficient operation and longevity.

A key feature of the Vanguard 245 Chiller is its integration with a separate 3-way water manifold. This manifold is designed to be attached to the chiller's three water inlets, facilitating the distribution of chilled water to various points of use. Inlets 1 and 2 are typically designated for supplying water to two carbonators, which might be located on a backroom panel or a Bag-In-Box (BIB) stand. These connections usually include shut-off valves on the panel for convenient control. Inlet number 3, along with its corresponding shut-off valve and outlet, forms a separate circuit specifically intended to supply chilled water to an ice machine. This dedicated circuit ensures that the ice machine also benefits from pre-chilled water, potentially improving its efficiency and ice production rate.

The installation process involves several steps to ensure proper setup and functionality. First, the mounting brackets, which consist of three pieces of two-inch angle iron, need to be prepared. These pieces are designed to be welded together after drilling 1/2-inch holes, forming a robust bracket system. Once the brackets are assembled, they are mounted to the wall. It is recommended to tie these brackets together with a shelf or bars for added stability. After the brackets are securely mounted, the chiller unit is installed onto these black angle brackets. Finally, the 3-way water manifold is connected to the inlet side of the chiller, completing the water distribution setup. A 10-foot inlet hose is typically used to supply water to the manifold.

Maintenance considerations for the Vanguard 245 Chiller primarily revolve around ensuring proper airflow and system integrity. Regular checks should be performed to ensure that the air intake and exhaust areas are clear of obstructions. This helps prevent the accumulation of dust or debris that could hinder cooling efficiency or lead to component failure. Given its mechanical refrigeration system, periodic inspection of the refrigeration lines and components for any signs of leaks or damage would be prudent. The water bath system might require occasional cleaning to prevent the buildup of scale or contaminants, which could affect heat transfer efficiency. Ensuring that all water connections, especially those involving the 3-way manifold and shut-off valves, are secure and free from leaks is also essential for reliable operation.

The robust construction and thoughtful design of the Vanguard 245 Chiller underscore its suitability for demanding commercial environments. Its ability to effectively pre-chill water not only enhances the performance of beverage dispensing units but also contributes to a more consistent and high-quality product for consumers. The flexibility in mounting options and the integrated water distribution system make it a versatile addition to various beverage service setups, from quick-service restaurants to large-scale institutional kitchens. By focusing on efficient water cooling, the chiller plays a critical role in optimizing the overall beverage dispensing process.
