Decoder Programming - SVC and OPS Programming
Difference Between Service (SVC) and Operations (OPS) Programming
Programming of decoders can be done in two different places. The first place is the programming
track. The decoder address is always programmed using the programming track. The second
place is while the train is on the mainline. Fine tuning of motion and sound effects is best done
while on the mainline because the changes take effect immediately and you can determine ifthe
locomotive performs as desired.
Except for the initial selection of the type of programming, the subsequent keystrokes are the
same. The main difference with OPS programming is the need to tell the Command Station what
locomotive address will be programmed. With SVC mode, the address doesn’t matter - the
decoder will be programmed.
Programming Is Easy
Programming of decoders is very simple requiring only a few keystrokes. Plain English
messages will guide you through the process. Step-by-step examples will be given for some of
the most common programming actions. Here’s a few guidelines to keep in mind regarding
decoder programming.
What is Programming? Programming is the process of customizing the decoder to suit your
requirements. During programming, data is transferred from the Command Station to the
decoder. All data transferred to the locomotive is permanent. Removing power will not cause the
decoder to loose any data. Programming decoders is usually done after they are installed in the
locomotive. Programming takes place on an electrically isolated section of track called a
programming track.
You can not harm decoders during the programming process. Any programming done to a
decoder can be undone.
You must have your decoder or locomotive user guide on hand during programming. It
contains information about the decoders features and capabilities. Programming of the decoder
is what sets up or modifies these features.
Program One Locomotive At A Time. Only one locomotive can be on the track during
programming.
Keep Your Programming Track Clean. Since the locomotive decoder receives programming
data through the rails, make sure the rails and wheels are clean and be sure all wheels are on the
rails. Dirty wheels and rail will cause poor pickup and interrupt decoder programming.
Programming Track Is Not For Running Locomotives. The programming track only has
voltage during a decoder programming procedure. Do not attempt to operate a locomotive on the
programming track it will not run!
Any NMRA-DCC decoder can be programmed by EasyDCC. Your EasyDCC system will
program ALL decoders that conform to the NMRA-DCC signal format. However, decoder
verification or readout of various decoder values may be restricted to non-sound decoders unless
your have installed the programming track booster described on page 19.
