Overview

The Danfoss TP7000 Range is an Electronic 7 Day Programmable Room Thermostat designed to provide flexible and energy-efficient control over your home's heating system. It combines the functionalities of both a programmer and a room thermostat, allowing you to set specific 'On' and 'Off' time periods and desired temperatures to suit your lifestyle.

Function Description

The TP7000 allows users to program up to six different time and temperature settings for each day of the week, offering comprehensive flexibility in managing heating schedules. This level of control contributes to energy savings by ensuring that heating is only active when needed and at the desired comfort level. The device comes with preset programmes that are designed to suit most common household routines, making it ready for use straight out of the box. However, these settings are fully customizable to meet individual preferences.

A key aspect of the TP7000's functionality is its ability to operate in either a 7-day mode or a 5/2 day mode, which is typically configured by the installer. In 7-day mode, you can program unique heating schedules for each day of the week. In 5/2 day mode, you can set one programme for weekdays (Monday to Friday) and a separate programme for weekends (Saturday and Sunday). This adaptability ensures that the thermostat can cater to various weekly routines, whether they are consistent or vary significantly between weekdays and weekends.

The device also incorporates several energy-saving features and useful user overrides. For instance, it includes a 99-day holiday mode, which allows the thermostat to maintain a constant, lower temperature while you are away, automatically returning to your programmed settings after the specified number of days. This prevents unnecessary heating of an empty home while also protecting against frost damage.

The TP7000 operates by sensing the air temperature in the room. When the air temperature falls below the set thermostat setting, it switches on the heating. Once the set temperature is reached, it switches the heating off. It's important to understand that turning the thermostat to a higher setting will not make the room heat up faster; the speed of heating depends on the design of the heating system, such as boiler size and radiator capacity. Similarly, the setting does not affect how quickly the room cools down. Setting a lower temperature will result in the room being controlled at a lower temperature, which directly contributes to energy savings.

The recommended approach to using the TP7000 for optimal comfort and energy efficiency is to find the lowest temperature settings that you are comfortable with at different times. It is suggested to start with low temperatures, for example, 18°C, and then gradually increase them by one degree each day until you find your comfortable level. Once these settings are established, further adjustments should ideally be unnecessary, as any settings above these comfortable levels will waste energy and incur additional costs.

For homes with a boiler and radiators, there is typically one programmable room thermostat controlling the entire house. However, individual room temperatures can be managed by installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on individual radiators. If TRVs are not present, the thermostat should be set to a temperature that is reasonable for the whole house. If TRVs are installed, the thermostat can be set slightly higher to ensure the coldest room is comfortable, and then TRVs can be used to prevent overheating in other rooms.

Usage Features

The TP7000 features an intuitive interface with several buttons for programming and making adjustments.

  • Setting the Clock and Day: The PROG button initiates programming. The DAY button cycles through the days of the week (1=Monday, 2=Tuesday, etc.). The '+' and '-' buttons are used to adjust the time, with a press-and-hold function for 10-minute increments.
  • Display Preferences: Users can choose between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F) for temperature display by pressing and holding DAY & COPY for 2-3 seconds. The clock display can also be toggled between 12-hour (with AM/PM) and 24-hour modes by pressing and holding NEXT & DAY for 2-3 seconds.
  • OSC Period Setting: If enabled by the installer, the OSC (Optimum Start Control) function allows users to select a period (e.g., 0:30, 1:00, 1:30, 2:00) using the '+' or '-' buttons. This feature helps the system learn the optimal time to start heating to reach the desired temperature by the programmed time. Setting it to 0:00 disables the function.
  • Accepting Preset Programmes: If the factory preset programmes are suitable, simply closing the front cover will automatically accept these settings after two minutes. The unit then enters RUN mode, indicated by a flashing colon in the display, and operates according to the presets.
  • Programming Custom Schedules: To modify the preset programmes, press PROG until Event 1 flashes. In 7-day mode, press DAY to move to Day 1, then use '+' and '-' to adjust time and the up/down arrows to adjust temperature in 0.5°C (1°F) steps. The NEXT button advances to the next event. This process is repeated for all six events and then for each day of the week. The COPY button allows users to duplicate the previous day's programme. In 5/2 day mode, the process is similar, but you program for weekdays (Day 1-5) and then for weekends (Day 6-7), with the option to copy the weekday programme to the weekend.
  • Thermostat Mode Conversion: The TP7000 can be converted to a constant thermostat mode, overriding the programmed schedule. This is achieved by pressing and holding the up and down arrow buttons together until the display shows a blinking colon and a default temperature (8°C). The temperature can then be adjusted using the up or down arrows. The unit remains in this mode until the up and down arrows are pressed together again.
  • Holiday Mode: While in thermostat mode, holiday mode can be programmed. Press DAY, and the display will show a suitcase icon and ':00'. Use '+' and '-' to set the number of holiday days (up to 99). The constant temperature can also be adjusted. After the set number of days, the unit automatically returns to its normal programmed operation. To exit holiday mode prematurely, press the up and down arrow buttons together.
  • User Overrides: The TP7000 offers several temporary overrides without affecting the stored programmes:
    • Temporary Temperature Increase/Decrease: Press the up or down arrow to select a desired temperature, which will temporarily override the programmed setting.
    • Extend Event 1: Pressing a specific button (as shown in the manual) will extend Event 1 (e.g., 06:30 20°C) to last all day, maintaining a constant temperature.
    • Extend Current Temperature: Pressing a specific button once extends the current temperature by 1 hour, twice for 2 hours, three times for 3 hours. Pressing it four times removes the override.
    • Display Toggle: Pressing NEXT & COPY together alternates the main LCD display between showing the current time and the actual room temperature.

Maintenance Features

The primary maintenance feature highlighted in the manual is battery replacement.

  • Changing Batteries (not TP7000M): The TP7000 is battery-powered, and the batteries are expected to last in excess of two years. A low battery indicator will flash on the LCD display when the batteries are running low. Users have a 15-day window from the first appearance of this indicator to replace the batteries with high-quality alkaline cells. This ensures continuous operation and prevents unexpected heating interruptions.
  • General Care: Programmable room thermostats, including the TP7000, require a free flow of air to accurately sense the room temperature. Therefore, it is crucial that the device is not covered by curtains or blocked by furniture. Additionally, nearby heat sources such as electric fires, televisions, or lamps (wall or table) can interfere with the thermostat's proper functioning, so it should be positioned away from such items.
  • Time Adjustments: Some types of programmers require manual adjustment for daylight saving changes in spring and autumn (Greenwich Mean Time and British Summer Time). The manual implies that the user may need to be aware of this, depending on the specific model's capabilities for automatic time adjustment.
