Overview

The provided document is an owner's assembly and operating manual for a "Competitor Ultra Light Plus, Semi Electric Bed," identified by item numbers 15560 and 15560-HR. This bed is designed to provide adjustable positioning for users, featuring both head and foot section adjustments, and offers two methods for motor installation.

Function Description

The Competitor Ultra Light Plus, Semi Electric Bed is a medical bed designed for home or institutional use, offering adjustable head and foot sections to enhance user comfort and care. It is classified as "semi-electric" because it utilizes an electric motor for adjusting the sleep surface, while other adjustments, such as overall bed height, may involve manual components. The bed is operated via a hand control, which allows the user or caregiver to easily adjust the head and foot sections. A key safety feature is the ability to return the sleep surface to a horizontal position in the event of a power failure, thanks to an optional 9V battery in the hand control. The bed is also designed to accommodate optional accessories such as casters and half-rails, though specific installation instructions and warnings apply to these.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model Numbers: 15560, 15560-HR
  • Bed Type: Ultra Light Plus, Semi Electric Bed
  • Weight Limit: The total weight limit for the Drive Medical 36-inch (91.4 cm) wide Manual/Electric bed (including accessories, mattress, occupant, and any other person/object positioned on the bed) is 450 pounds (204 kg). The patient weight limit is 350 pounds (158 kg).
  • Height Adjustments: The bed deck offers two height adjustments. Adjustment one is located on the frame, providing high and low positions. Adjustment two is on the leg of the head and footboard, allowing for further height customization. The manual provides a detailed chart of deck heights (in inches) ranging from 11" to 23", indicating corresponding "Deck Height Pins" (Lower/Upper), "Leg Hole" (Low/Middle/High), and whether "Wheels" can be used at that height. For example, a 11" deck height uses "Lower" pins and "Low" leg hole, and wheels cannot be used. A 23" deck height uses "Upper" pins and "High" leg hole, and wheels can be used.
  • Caster Accessory: Model # 15044SET (sold separately). It is recommended to install one non-locking caster on each bed end, with locking casters installed diagonally from each other.
  • Trapeze Compatibility: The bed can be used with a free-standing trapeze or a Drive Medical frame-mounted trapeze (Item # 15560TRAPEZE). A trapeze cannot be mounted on the Competitor headboard.
  • Electrical Requirements: The hand control illuminates when the bed is plugged into a grounded or polarized wall outlet. An optional 9V battery (not included) can be installed in the hand control for power failure backup.
  • Extension Cord Usage: If an extension cord is used, it must be a three-wire cord with at least 16 AWG (American Wire Gauge) wire and an electrical rating equal to or higher than the device. Three-to-two prong adapters are not to be used.

Usage Features

  • Hand Control Operation: The bed is operated via a hand control, which allows for easy adjustment of the head and foot sections. The hand control illuminates when powered.
  • Power Failure Backup: The hand control can be equipped with a 9V battery (not included) to allow the motor to return the sleep surface to a horizontal position in case of a power outage.
  • Two Motor Installation Methods:
    • Method A: Motor is installed when the bed frame is standing on its side. This method involves aligning and snapping the motor into the actuator bar on both the head and foot ends.
    • Method B: Motor is installed from underneath the bed frame when it is horizontal to the ground. This method also involves aligning and snapping the motor into the actuator bar.
  • Height Adjustment Options: The bed offers multiple height configurations through two adjustment points: one on the frame (high/low positions) and another on the leg of the head and footboard (adjustable via a thumb screw and spring-loaded knob).
  • Bed Rail Installation: Bed rails are installed by lifting the head section, pulling the rail receptacle outward, and turning it to receive the rail. Half-rails are installed over a specific label on the head section of the frame, with a clamp mechanism.
  • Caster Installation (Optional): Casters are inserted into the leg receptacle. It's recommended to install non-locking casters on each bed end and locking casters diagonally for stability.

Maintenance Features

  • Electronics Checks:
    • Regularly check all controls (foot and head) for proper function.
    • Inspect all cables (power and pendant) for damage or fraying.
    • Ensure all plugs are fully inserted.
    • Check and annually replace the 9V battery on the motor and in the hand control.
  • Bed Frame & Sleeping Surface Checks:
    • Visually inspect all welds on the head section, foot section, and main frame.
    • Check joints between sleeping surface sections for loose fasteners.
  • Cleaning:
    • Metal parts are powder-coated and can be power washed.
    • Clean all coated parts with mild detergent and warm water.
    • Periodically raise head and feet sections to remove dust from the frame.
    • Clean the mattress deck regularly.
    • If liquid is spilled, unplug the bed, clean the spill, and allow the bed and surrounding area to dry thoroughly before resuming use.
    • Always unplug the bed from the electrical outlet before cleaning.
  • General Maintenance:
    • After any adjustments, repair, or service, ensure all attaching hardware is tightened securely.
    • After assembly, test all sections to ensure they are properly and securely in place.
    • Inspect the covering of the bed's control panel and patient control panel for cracks or damage.
    • Ensure all cables and cords are routed to prevent entanglement or pinching.
    • Keep all electrical cords away from heated or hot surfaces.
    • If the unit is not working properly, or if it has a damaged cord/plug, or has been dropped/damaged/dropped in water, call a qualified technician for examination and repair.
    • Only qualified technicians are permitted to repair internal assemblies (motors, pendant, junction boxes, gear boxes); user attempts will void the warranty.
  • Warranty:
    • Lifetime warranty on welds.
    • 5-year warranty on the frame.
    • 5-year warranty on the motor.
    • 5-year warranty on the hand control.
    • 1-year warranty on all other parts and components.
    • Defective items will be replaced at Drive's option at no charge during the warranty period.
